Taking on the responsibility of supporting the DCS: MiG-21bis and building the sometimes maligned Christen Eagle II aerobatic bi-plane, Leatherneck had been fairly silent about their progress on other products but we now know that their team is taking on a new challenge – at least that’s what their Facebook page is reporting today. Also we’re seeing some more progress on the F4U Corsair. Let’s check it out!
In addition to the earlier images, we’re now seeing the Corsair fuselage for the first time. Leatherneck’s art ability and weathering is certainly impressive as are the little details. These are still early days for the F4U Corsair for DCS World but progress does appear to be coming along.
Enter the Crusader
Leatherneck is teasing us and have all but confirmed that the DCS: F-8 Crusader is something that they are also now working on.

while we are making sure Corsair will shine in all its glory, the other team prepares to give wings to yet another amazing bird… You’ve heard the saying: “When you’re out of F-8’s – you’re out of fighters.”
The F-8 Crusader, the “Last of the Gunfighters,” was a US Navy fighter with an impressive 19:3 kill ratio earned during the Vietnam War. It also saw service with the French Navy and Philippine Air Force. The F-8 is very much a 1950s and 1960s era jet although it managed to last in service until the 1980s in various guises – it also played a role in fly-by-wire flight control testing with NASA.
More relevant to us, the F-8s mix of four 20mm cannons and early AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles combined with speed and agility made the F-8 Crusader a fearsome opponent. It had a top speed of Mach 1.8 and a service ceiling of 58,000 feet. .
