In December 2016, IL-2 patch 2.006 was released and with it the ability to include 4K textures onto aircraft models for the first time. Adding the feature of doubling the resolution of the in-game textures was just the first step because the textures then also need to be upgraded and the best way to do that sometimes is to start nearly from scratch. The 1CGS team doesn’t have a ton of time to do that kind of work, fortunately, some in the community have stepped up to the challenge and we have them to thank for a growing number of aircraft getting 4K default textures. I want to take a moment to recognize them and their work!
Update: I mis-attributed some of the skins to the wrong author and have since corrected it.
Some, not all aircraft have 4K textures
One of the first aircraft to get the 4K texture treatment was, fittingly, the IL-2 Model 1943. Community member =BlackHellHound1= was responsible for the upgrade and it makes the 1943 edition of the IL-2 absolutely beautiful to look at.
He also did some great updates to the Bf109F-2 and F-4 including these beauties:
We also have Martin =ICDP= Catney to thank for an immense amount of work on multiple aircraft starting with the P-47D-28 which got the 4K treatment in February of this year.
There was also the Spitfire IXe that received the 4K treatment as well as more period accurate roundels and colours.
Wednesday’s patch also included the FW190A-3 in 4K…
…and the Bf109G-14 too.
Then there’s the incredible work on the FW190D-9 which was done internally by the 1CGS team.
I’ve probably missed a few along the way but I think I’ve probably got my point across. The work here is both accurate and artistic representing hundreds or thousands of hours of work collectively by at least a couple of members of the IL-2 community.
That also doesn’t factor in the amazing work done by other skin artists in the community forums which you should also check out!
These fine details help make the sim world that much more real and I for one really appreciate it. Well done folks!
