IL-2 dev diary talks September patch, new images, B-25!

It was a relatively short IL-2 developer diary this week but one with a couple of key pieces of information and some stunning screenshots released by the team. Bodenplatte is looking very close to completion now! Let’s talk about what we’ve learned and what’s next.

Feast your eyes!

A huge selection of screenshots came with this patch and I decided I’d break them down a little and talk about each one.

In this first set of screenshots we’ve got the legendary P-51D-15 Mustang. This classic American fighter is long awaited and it looks like the wait was worth it. The classic lines, the beautiful skin and texture work, and the cockpit look better than ever. Not that it was in much doubt but 1CGS has pulled out the stops to make sure that we have the K-14 gunsight, 500lb bombs and the M8 Bazooka 4.5in rockets. Excellent!

Then we have the P-38J-25 Lightning. Some skins are on view here with the all red Yippee standing out while some of the more classic bare metal schemes look stunning too. So does that cockpit which looks to have gotten some added work since the last time I saw it – or maybe that’s just me? In either case we can also see the P-38’s M8 Bazooka 4.5in rockets, 500lb bombs, and the fighter’s concentrated nose guns on display.

One aircraft that we haven’t yet seen textured or in-engine is the B-25D (AI only) Mitchell bomber. That now changes with several beautiful images on display of the venerable bomber. While the USAAF used the B-25 in other theatres, it was the RAF that used the Mitchell heavily in Europe both before and after the D-Day invasion. Also note the D-Day invasion stripes which were not removed until early January with some RAF bomber units.

The Rhineland map

Also on display in all of these images in the Rhineland map. While some images don’t feature it directly, we do have one image of the P-38 that really stands out as we see a new airbase arrangement that I’ve never seen before. The buildings being arranged in a semi-circle pattern just add to the effect. It’s clear that the 1CGS map team really pulled out the stops to make airbases look great and to have their own unique feel!

Patch still on track for September?

The dev diary indicates that the team is still on track for a September patch which means that it could come any time in the next two weeks if that goal is still hit. As 1CGS tends to patch early in the week, it’s likely that the release window is either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week or the same two days in the week to follow.

My best guess is that we’ll see the patch in two weeks.

The other clear indication is that this is not the last before Bodenplatte is done. There are likely still some loose ends to tie up as the team comes into the finish line and the update from the team indicates that they are also looking to deliver the final content for Flying Circus Vol 1 (namely the map!) in the coming weeks.

We’ll just have to wait and see!

How do you say it so beautifully? Small but nice.
I would agree with the tip that we will get the patch in 2 weeks (if everything works out). What also makes me very happy is that we get the bazookas for the P-51 (I was afraid we would only get bombs). I keep my fingers crossed for the team that they can do that.

That is some quality content indeed.
The real question is this one though: Two weeks or… “two weeks” ??
