Last flights of 2019

My last flights of 2019 have happened over the last 48 hours and I always find it fun to mark the occasion and think about what kind of sim flying I’m going to be doing next year. Let’s talk about a couple of my last flights.

TAW sorties

At the start of 2019 I said that I wanted to fly more multiplayer and get more involved with the multiplayer scene. That definitely happened and I’ve been fortunate to be able to fly semi-regularly online in the later half of this year.

Two of my last IL-2: Great Battles sorties were on the Tactical Air War server. In our first sortie we went after a group of tanks with a trio of IL-2 Model 1943’s armed with 37mm gunpods and PTAB bomblets.

Using team tactics to draw the AAA fire, we eliminated most of the AAA batteries (although not before I sustained heavy damage from one lucky shot) and headed for home. But not before I snapped this screenshot.

This image is a capture of one of those fantastic moments in the IL-2 series where the scenery and the lighting and art all line up in a great way.

In a second sortie and my last flight of 2019 in the IL-2 series, we headed out again with a trio of aircraft that were this time Pe-2’s. After arriving at target we proceeded to attack. All of my bombs missed but one of our group managed a large number of kills but sustained damage from an attacking fighter.

Fortunately, the attacking fighter was dispatched by the rear gunner (we are usually not so lucky) and we headed home.

Training for more Hornet in 2020

My last flight of 2020 in DCS World was fittingly in the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet. It’s my favourite module and I was more than happy to be able to walk a fellow sim pilot through the basics of the Hornet and combat operations with it in DCS World.

We flew a couple of sorties using a mix of weapons including the AIM-9X, AIM-120, MK82 bombs in CCIP mode, the 20mm Vulcan cannon and 2.75in rocket pods. It was a fun sortie that I ended with a 90 degree off boresight AIM-9X kill on a target drone.

All great fun and a great reminder of how fun the Hornet module is even when it’s about going back to basics.

First flights in 2020 to come

My first flights in 2020 are going to hopefully be more of the same as well as some new opportunities. I’m going to be flying the DCS: Mi-8, F-14 Tomcat, JF-17 Thunder, F-16C Viper and AJS-37 Viggen a lot more in 2020 and I’m hoping to get back into the MiG-19P as well. For IL-2 I’m going to continue my Tempest campaign and fly some more eastern front multiplayer and single player. That’s not to forget getting in Flying Circus Vol 1 flying as well which has been some of the most fun I’ve had in IL-2 multiplayer to date. Looking forward to chronicling just a few of my experiences in the process.

My new year thank you message will go out tomorrow morning but until then – Happy New Year! Best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun 😉

Happy New Year to you, Shamrock, and to all fans around here!

In one of the last 2019 flights, I rediscovered the DCS Spitfire yesterday afternoon, and the new sounds make such a difference! It felt like I could just fly for hours, just to chill and enjoy the scenery and the harmonious Merlin chorus. Awesome.
