The flight sim community extends far and wide across the little blue dot that we call home and right now we’re all facing some difficult and challenging times. Members of the IL-2 community have come together to symbolically show support and I thought that it was such a great idea that I wanted to throw some support for it.
It’s not a challenge
IL-2 forum member ITAF_Airone1989 posted on the IL-2 forums a couple of weeks ago about a “not a challenge” that one of their YouTube followers had suggested to their squadron. Using the aerobatic smoke available in IL-2, they suggested flying a formation a bit like the Italian aerobatic squadron, the Frecce Tricolori, which has in some circles become a symbol of endurance during these challenging times.
I’ll let Airone1989 explain the next part,
Corona it’s a constant in our mind, we are surrounded by this topic during our days, during our nights, during our “eatpasta” moments and also during our time in flight. We really believe that everything will be ok, but we are living a weird situation.
Our only goal it’s to involve as many others groups as possible in this videos and, why not, to do a compilation them. We hope it’s a simple way for this community to show a little bit of love to everybody, to remember that we really like to make holes in enemy airplanes, but we are always ready to hug them when needed.ITAF_Airone1989
Here are the suggested rules of this “not a challenge”:
- It’s not a challenge.
- It’s a little way to show our love to the whole community in this difficult moment.
- Record a formation flight using aerobatic smoke with the colours of your country (or whatever colour scheme you want).
- Your choice if you want to do aerobatics, a formation flypast, or something else. Make it look good!
And here’s their flypast to see what they did.
I think this is a wonderful show of solidarity and I’m hopeful that other members of the flight simulator community (IL-2, DCS, X-Plane, whatever) might be interested in coming together to fly their own version of this. I’m working with a group to do our own Canadian-American flypast to join with the ITAF squadron in supporting this. Ping me in the comments if you do!
