I’m very pleased to be able to take the wrapper off of the first episode of the Stormbirds podcast. The first episode brings together four members of the community and I to talk about how to get started in IL-2: Great Battles Series multiplayer.
Listen in!
Episode background

There’s a couple of reasons I wanted to do this as the first episode of the Stormbirds podcast. First, it was recorded and intended to be released before the Sturmovikfest events got started with the goal of getting people more interested than ever into multiplayer. I ran out of time to get everything done that I needed done so this episode comes a little after the fact. That said, I still want to encourage people to give multiplayer a try. It may seem daunting but it gets better and it can be one of the best ways to experience the series.
To that point, I brought together a variety of different people with a variety of experiences. I have IL-2 multiplayer experience stretching back to the early days of IL-2: Forgotten Battles and even earlier. All told I probably have about 18 years of multiplayer flight experience in the IL-2 series (that’s a little crazy when I think about it).

I also brought in Requiem from the Air Combat Tutorial Library who has a long experience with multiplayer in Rise of Flight and IL-2 and he’s also a real world pilot instructor and airline Captain.
We also have Jon Coughlin, developer of Roger Metaball, and an industry enthusiast who is newer to the multiplayer scene but now quite a veteran of our TAW campaigns and coming at our discussion from the point of view of a developer.
Wolfpack345 has a YouTube channel that covers single and multiplayer and he often streams Flying Circus flights. His experiences streaming content, flying with the World War I side of the series, and general IL-2 experience help inform the discussion too.
Finally, we invited Utopioneer to the discussion. Utopioneer is very new to multiplayer but not new to sims and his new IL-2 Flight School training campaigns are becoming extremely popular.
New at this
With the current isolation going on I’m branching out and trying new and creative things so this is going to be a fresh start and will likely come with some growing pains. Although I’ve previously been a guest on The Unprofessionals podcast with Deadmeat and Magz, I’ve never run my own podcast. I’m new at this and I’m trying a new thing here so there are bound to be some glitches in the process.
Let me know how the first episode goes for you, if you enjoyed it, and what kind of topics I might do in the future.
Right now I’m also only offering this on YouTube but if other podcasting plaforms are desired I can look into putting that together in the future. Let me know in the comments!
Next episode is with Jason Williams
The next episode is in queue and I will be releasing it on Friday, May 22nd at 11:00 am EDT. That episode is with Jason Williams, Lead Producer for the IL-2: Great Battles Series. We talk past, present, future and all things flight simulation. Stay tuned!
That was a very nice start into podcasting, shamrockonefive. Well, since you asked: I prefer podcasts to come from one of the podcasting platforms. Looking forward to episode 2.

I am with APHORISMENOI,
Personally I would prefer to consume from one of the podcast platforms, it is more comfortable for me to enjoy interesting content in this way since I can do it while I work, do sports, etc.
The first chapter has been very good, waiting for the second one already.

That was really good, but – and maybe it was just me – one guy was very soft spoken and a bit hard to hear. He sounded…………….. calm.

This first episode is really cool, that’s a great start !
Glad to have a new podcast to listen to – I hope that you can publish it later on iTunes and/or Spotify, it will be a lot easier to catch up while working or in commute.

1-5, I finally got ’round to listening to this, and I’m glad I did; it’s very well done.
If you’re taking a poll – I use PocketCasts to organize all the podcasts I regularly hear.
As far as the topic goes – I’m not exactly a FS noob (been playing since the 80s), but I’m not overly experienced. I picked up IL2:GB in December and flew almost daily (SP only) from then until early March, but haven’t gone back to it lately with everything going on in the world. I plan to, though. I few MP a few times in IL2/1946 (a long time ago), but haven’t tried yet with GB. Mostly that’s because I’m terrible, but part of it is that I tend to fly after the rest of the family has gone to bed, so voice comms would be a cause of marital conflict. 😀 For now, I’ve been living vicariously through watching a few of you on YT.

Glad you were able to listen in! I’ve got a bunch of suggestions on what platform to use to spread the podcasts around – I’m doing too many things at once right now but I will try and get it sorted out.
There’s plenty of streams and other ways to enjoy vicariously – if you do get a chance be sure to check out Requiem’s Discord (see my recent article) for great ways to team up.
