DCS Lunar New Year sale is on plus free to play

The next DCS World sale is on and with it we have several modules on sale with some notable exceptions. Let’s have a look!

Sale trailer and discounts

No DCS sale is good without some sort of trailer and so here we have yet another stunning creation for DCS World right here. It’s worth it just for the beautiful sequences and glimpses of the new clouds.

Most DCS World modules are now 50% off and will be until February 15th at 15:00GMT. There are some exceptions including this list below.

Modules with a 30% discount:

  • P-47D Thunderbolt
  • The Channel
  • F/A-18C Hornet
  • F-16C Viper
  • A-10C II Tank Killer
  • Supercarrier

Exceptions:

  • F-14A/B Tomcat will have a 15% discount
  • JF-17 Thunder will be only $59.99
  • New Campaigns are not on sale
  • DCS: Syria

Also included as part of the sale is a new free to play period. It is set to begin shortly according to Eagle Dynamics and will give free access to all modules for the next ten days. It’s a smart way for Eagle Dynamics to let everyone try new modules and confirm if they want to spend their money on them.

The reason they are repeating free to fly events everytime they have a sale means it is working really well. I mean, I bought the L39 and the Yak52 thanks to that. I’d never purchase them without testing them because I thought “why would I buy a trainer?” but yeah, tested them and bought them right away.

On the other hand, I tried the Tomcat and the P47 and it was like “meh, not buying this” both are awesome models made with love and detail, but I just didn’t like flying them.

I guess it is a double edged sword.

By the way, you can buy a campaign with a really meaty discount and fly it even if you don’t have the maps/units/modules needed just because of the free to fly event. Imagine you purchase “The hunters from yalu” but you don’t have the sabre, or the WW2 units. Well, you don’t need them now, just spend 4 euros and you have everything you need for 10 days to finish the campaing and enjoy it.

Agreed! I suspect the last free to play events have really worked out well for them in terms of total sales. It does help when you have the opportunity to really try something in a largely unrestricted way for a few days. It could backfire but I think most of us are suckers for new stuff anyways 😉

      Good suggestion!

Yeah, I passed on the F-14 as well, but I did buy the Ka-50 because I fell in love with it during the last trial period. I think what DCS is getting is some serious customer loyalty. They’ve made a few mistakes along the way, but the fact that they let you try everything for free for a week or two is pretty ballsy and earns them a lot of forgiveness/patience/benefit of the doubt, certainly in my eyes.

I thought the first free trial last spring was a brilliant and generous move. Everyone was freaked out and locked in at home and then DCS just hands us everything they make to play with for two-weeks for free. They earned a ton of love from me just for that.

They were suffering a bit in the reputation department last year and I think free to play has gone a long way towards recouping some of that lost reputation (as well as getting onto a more sensible release schedule). And it seems to be working in the sales department too as they are doing these events more frequently. Not a bad thing when you want to try before you buy something this expensive!

I guess the sale and free trial means no clouds before the 15th. Probably the week of the 22nd at the soonest.

If we get the clouds and the Mosquito at the same time it’s going to be great.
