I said I’d amend my review if it was fixed and, true to my word, I have. This is because Carenado’s 1.1 version of the WYMF-5, the Waco bi-plane, has solved its weird ground handling issues. It’s a nice comeback for what should have been a home-run GA aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Here’s what they have fixed.
WYMF-5 gets a 1.1 update
I really wanted to recommend the WYMF-5 by Carenado because of how cool the aircraft was. Both in purpose as a cruiser of a bi-plane that was great for sightseeing and because of the beautiful detailing inside and out. It’s 1930’s style helped too. But I wasn’t about to recommend it on those alone with such a weird problem with the ground handling.
The tail wheel caused the aircraft to be stuck on multiple occasions. The YMF-5 would also veer wildly and unnaturally around on takeoff sometimes going from straight ahead to 40 degrees off axis in a quarter of a second. There was no progression and no feeling of it happening – it just happened.
Fortunately, I have now done a couple of flights with the type and it’s much improved.
The patch notes
Here’s what Carenado has published to their website in the form of patch notes:
- Improved ground handling by reducing torque effect.
- Recalibrated fuel consumption gauge.
- Recalibrated EGT and CHT needles.
- Fixed tail wheel lock.
- Fixed oil temp gauge.
- Fixed HDG bug.
- Fixed pilot head animation.
- Fixed flickering of windows in external view.
- Fixed compass interior lightning for easier read.
- Fixed DME’s speed calibration.
- minor bug fixes.
Review updated
As a result of this update, I have gone back and re-written parts of my review of the WYMF-5 by Carenado. Gone is my skepticism over the quality of the aircraft and I can now recommend it for the fun cruiser of a bi-plane that it is.
