The teams at Microsoft and Asobo Studio dropped a big surprise today with the announcement of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024! A new entry into the world of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Although we don’t know a ton of information yet, what we do see looks to be focused around offering new experiences within the sim. Let’s have a look!

Your career in aviation

Surprising nearly all of us, Flight Simulator 2024 is coming sometime next year and is offering some next generation features. The new sim is intended for release on multiple platforms including Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Windows 10/11, and Steam all on day one.

The trailer makes it clear that this next iteration brings forward more things to do with the sim. VIP transport, cargo slinging with helicopters, scientific missions, sky diving, crop dusting, powerline construction, and firefighting are just some of the things that we saw in the trailer – making it clear that this next iteration is all about adding to the experience.

Here’s what was said on the official website.

Pursue your dream of an aviation career with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This brand-new simulator is designed to take advantage of the latest technologies in simulation, cloud, machine learning, graphics and gaming to create the most sophisticated, immersive and awe-inspiring flight simulator of all time. To achieve this unprecedented level of accuracy, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is powered by the significantly evolved Asobo Studio engine.

It does appear that some visuals are being upgraded with pilots appearing to walk towards their aircraft before takeoff and might be more animated than before from within the cockpit. There’s also new and modified aircraft with types like the A-10, A-400M, a modified DA62 with a sensor suite (a real product offered by Diamond), and CL-415 waterbomber all making appearances in the trailer.

Other features like enhanced weather that includes forest fires, tornadoes and multiple seasons are all shown off.

In short, Microsoft and Asobo have come out swinging with many more new features that further expands on the world of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

What we don’t know yet

Many questions are being asked today as a result of the trailer and announcement and I expect that we’ll learn the answers to many of the biggest ones very soon. An obvious one is what kind of cross compatibility will we see between the new and the old version?

We don’t yet know what the plan is there, however, Microsoft and Asobo have been extremely successful as a result of their efforts to not only offer the simulator itself but open up a huge array of markets and cultivating the activities and interests of thousands of developers both big and small. How they intend to handle this and how this new 2024 edition will fit into the mix will probably determine a lot of what makes this future project a success or not.

I hope they have some smart answers prepared and that we don’t have to wait for long to hear what they are.

Nonetheless, I am very excited by the prospects of the future of this simulator series and I look forward to learning more!

Meanwhile… fly over the sands Arrakis

I read many of the Frank Herbert Dune novels when I was a kid and then watched the Sci-Fi miniseries and the most recent Denis Villeneuve movie as well. Colour me surprised and kind of impressed that we’re getting an interesting new movie tie in expansion for Dune with Microsoft Flight Simulator this fall.

This looks to be similar to the Top Gun Maverick tie in with a new aircraft, an Atreides ornithopter, and some sandy looking dunes to fly over. It should be fun!

  1. Exciting news. Lack of a career mode was an odd exclusion from 2020. Particularly for GA pilots. I hope for all hat have spent a lot of money on 2020 aircraft that they port over. And to all the developers as well. I’m sure there are many 2020 aircraft in development.

    1. Their FAQ https://www.flightsimulator.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-2024-faq/ indicates we get am upgrade discount and 2020 aircraft will be supported. That is something. I hope they improve the flight model, ATC etc.

I just saw that myself. I hope that they have the opportunity to upgrade lots of detail things while maintaining what is already a solid base with tons of content.

From the FAQ it sounds encouraging!

      2. There’s exactly no indication about an upgrade discount in the FAQ – or I’m seeing different words.

        From your link:
Q: “…will [MSFS2024] also be offered as a paid update for existing players?”
A: “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is a standalone simulator and the next-generation sequel to Microsoft Flight Simulator that launched in 2020. Current aircraft and airports that are in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), as well as virtually all Marketplace add-ons, will be supported in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.”

No discount, no upgrade, until I hear or read otherwise. In essence, Microsoft’s marketing told us all that our MSFS2020 main.exe install is obsolete like Windows 7.

  2. Can’t say I ever cared much for a career in aviation, virtual or real, or that I ever actually ran out of things to do or places to go in MSFS but I like that the sim’s engine is getting expanded to accommodate for all these various activities – especially if they support modding. I had high hopes that the Reno Air Race module would bring with it updates to the SDK and a way for people to properly add races in the sim, alas that never came to be.

One thing is for sure, there are many questions to be answered until release; hopefully they won’t bungle with the content compatibility.

  3. Mixed feelings here.

On the one hand I love MSFS and how it is being developed. On the other hand I would like to see it as an expansion to MSFS and not new game. I doubt new release will include from the start everything what MSFS alredy got. And for sure system requirements will be bigger.

I would really like to have it as an expansion, not standalone sequel.

What happens if it ends up being a bit of both. A sim that has everything else in it from before plus new?

      1. I doubt it will happen, but that would be good, very good.

On the other hand I just upgraded my rig with 4080 for VR and I am afraid it will become obsolete quite soon.

I actually think it’s the most likely scenario but we’ll see how it pans out in the coming weeks. I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more!

    2. I don’t think you should be overly concerned. According to what we know:
      a. v2020 – the current version – will continue on AND receive updates & some promised features.
      b. v2024 is the next version and will be compatible with current addons and current systems.

Think of it mostly along the lines of X-Plane 11 vs X-Plane 12.

Hi Nahuel. That’s an interesting perspective. How do you feel that this lacks respect? What would be an ideal cadence for major updates?

      1. good day. The best thing that can happen is that the franchise grows, but first finish the previous product. they did not complete the list of 2020 features that in my opinion should be there from the day of departure, I would like to know if the development is still considered beta even. Without doing much memory, the sharedcockpit and the campaign are still missing, I’m sure that if I search I’ll find more things that haven’t been done yet and that were on the list, in addition to the incomplete or bugged ones (gp, icing, atc, etc). I personally don’t buy the excuse that in the past fs was sold every 2 years and no one complained, it’s true, as it is also true that the product they sold you was already fully functional with almost no bugs and its complete features. And to be honest, if only developing msfs 2020 (and we’re in the middle of 2023) the game still feels like a beta, what will the rest of the development be like dividing its attention and resources into 2 products? Do not take it as an exaltation, it is simply that it seems to me a lack of respect for the client.

There’s always a challenge between how much you can proceed on the current product before there’s a business or software need to launch something new.

The roadmap issue is an interesting one too. Their FAQ today leaves the door open to some additional work on MSFS. What that looks like I think remains to be seen.

        Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

MSFS is the sim I use the least, I rather go for DCS, Il-2 or X-Plane.
Lets face it, while they said this platform is going to be worked on for the next 10 years (thats 2030), now they rather charge for another update. MSFS is a money machine, it’s not there to deliver the best armchair pilots experience or realism. But if there are any significant changes in flightmodeling and UX, I‘ll reconsider.

  6. Overall it sounds like things are going to be just fine (now that we know all the addons will remain compatible, as expected since it’s essentially the same software).

The really interesting thing (to me, at least) is that v2020 is going to continue receiving updates and even some new features. This is extremely atypical for flight sims & software in general.

I’m one of the people who’s never really been satisfied with just flying from airport to airport, regardless of the aircraft. The new mission orientation of v2024 is extremely welcome (and some of the new aircraft are ones I’ve wanted in the sim for awhile). Now there will be something to do other than just fly the plane and look out the window. I’m all in 🙂

  7. I feel just as excited now as I was when I saw what FSX Acceleration had when I was 7 years old! My favourite missions were rescuing people with the hoist on the EH-101 helicopter and the UFO intercept mission in the F-18.

      3. Ummm. Well, the Aliens drop ship would be my first as kick-ass. I did not like the film much, but some of the Avatar helicoptery things.

The Republic assault transports (Hinds) from the prequel trilogy? They were kewl.

All interesting options to me! I don’t think any of those have any movies coming in the next little bit that would get a cross licensing/promotion deal.

Next Star Wars movie is a couple of years out if I remember right. Hopefully then!

Always important to remember the business side drives what’s happening – particularly with these cross promotions.

    2. I like the Dune Ornithopter. And I also don’t see any other blockbuster movie coming out this year where a tie-in with a flight sim would make sense. The canyon in the map they’re adding will be fun to fly through as well.

If they’re doing a game tie-in again, the Starfield release this fall would make a lot of sense, that’s also Microsoft. The next Avatar movie is 2 years away (at least), but there’s also a game releasing at the end of the year. I just think it’s unlikely because it’s made by Ubisoft, and the previous Avatar game was Ubisoft as well so they seem to have a licensing deal.

If you want the Star Wars Republican Gunship (Hind), there’s a mod featuring a Lego version: https://flightsim-squadron.itch.io/flightsim-lego/devlog/274334/lego-republic-gunship, or this pack with a bunch of Star Wars models including the Razor Crest: https://flightsim-squadron.itch.io/x-wing.

      1. Replying to myself, regarding the Aliens dropship, in a way it’s already in MSFS because the Halo Pelican was heavily based on it. The Pelican is a bit bigger (and no APC) but would still probably fly about the same in the atmosphere. I had forgotten it was in MSFS, should really take that one out for a spin.

The Avatar craft have always looked like family to the Aliens dropship as well, not that strange considering they’re all James Cameron movies.

I know an aerospace engineer or two who really thought the new Dune movie’s ornithopter was damned cool as an engineering concept so I’m excited to give it a go!
