Ugra Media have created something of a hit with their DCS: Syria map. Although skepticism was high in the beginning, the map has won over much of the community with its attention to detail at low altitudes as well as the wide scale and scope of the map that has only increased with time. Ugra Media aren’t done yet as a new development update makes clear.

Performance, visual updates on the way

This week’s DCS World Weekend Update highlighted news that Ugra Media are continuing to work on the DCS: Syria map. Some of the improvements are fundamental to the map with a 10-20% increase in frame rate, updated lighting model which really makes a difference for night time flying, new cars and right hand traffic on the island of Cypus, updates to the map’s legend, and augmented vehicle damage models.

Ugra Media provided their own update last weekend highlighting the same feature list but also noting that they have added kneeboard support (long requested), updates to the mission generator, added helicopter landing sites on the map’s GUI, optimized forests, new and optimized models, two types of gas stations, two types of road-side cafes, and improved road and railroads.

I’m impressed with the amount of effort put in helping to cement DCS: Syria as one of the top choices for DCS World pilots in multiplayer and single player. With several upcoming campaigns all using the map this bodes well for anyone looking to spend some time flying over this area.

This update is due in the next DCS World Open Beta update so look for that soon. I’ll probably need to re-review the map too so look for that later on down the road.

Oh yes. DCS: Syria is perhaps the best modern map available for all types of flyers. It is demanding but they also seem to keep on optimizing it so performance has improved.

  3. If you’re only going to purchase one paid terrain for DCS World in 2023, it should be Syria; hands down. This is the gold standard map in the game currently and they’re only making it better. Not only does it look great from 0 ft to the stratosphere but it performs really well too and again they’re only making it better. I say all this as a big fan of the new Sinai map, but Sinai will take years to get to where Syria is in terms of features, optimization and more importantly mission/server support
