DCS: Syria gets more airports, more performance

I remain consistently impressed with the improvements that Ugra Media continue to pour into DCS: Syria. The latest update from their development team indicate that they are adding more airports to the map and they have boosted performance again thanks to some additional optimization work.

DCS: Syria is faster, has more stuff

Ugra Media continue to work away on their masterpiece of a map for DCS World with DCS: Syria picking up even more details and more airports to fly into and out of.

Four new airports are due to arrive in the next update. They are:

  • Amman Civil Airport
  • Herzliya Airport
  • King Abdullah II Air Base
  • Prince Hussein Air Base

Three of those are located in Jordan, in the south eastern corner of the DCS: Syria map, while Herzliya Airport is a small civil aviation airport with a 1,500 foot runway. Not suitable for most jet fighters (Viggen flyers might want to give it a go and Harrier fans can laugh in VTOL) but smaller fixed and rotary winged assets could set down here.

Meanwhile, Ugra Media have also been working on performance with news that models have been optimized, textures reassembled, and other tweaks have been implemented resulting in a 20% increase in FPS over city areas and 5-20% increase over forests. A test rig featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 3700x / RTX 2080Ti saw frame rates jump over cities from 85 to 110 fps. Impressive!

Two videos and dozens of screenshots have been released. Check the update out here!

A great map and we’re certainly getting our money’s worth and more. Ugra has done a top shelf job with the Syria map.

    A#1 for Ugra’s rep!

I really enjoy this map. I’m toying with buying the Sinai Map but I’m a little confused, Doesn’t it cover a lot of what the Syria Map covers?

The big thing with Sinai is the canal and Cairo, which is yuuuge. And of course Gaza and some good sized cities and airports in Israel. I don’t think the countryside looks as good in Sinai as in Syria, but Sinai has more dense cities and infrastructure. Sinai is almost an experiment to see how many buildings you can put on one map. It’s fun, but all in all Syria is a better map.

They do have a fair bit of overlap on the southern part of Israel and parts of Jordan but most of the details on Sinai are to the west covering Sinai and Egypt. Syria extends north to Türkiye and Cyprus.
