Recent developer blogs from the 1CGS team haven’t really given us the kind of insights on longstanding projects that I’d hoped to see but this latest one redresses that a little bit by giving us a lengthier update on what is currently being worked on for the Great Battles series including some good news about the IAR, info about the CG-4 glider, and Flying Circus too. No news on the new series yet. In the meantime, let’s dig into the latest.

Flying Circus Vol 3 R.E.8 and map update

The conclusion of Flying Circus Vol 3 development is coming up quickly and we have a few new details. First, the final aircraft in the set is in development with the R.E.8 two-seater and reconnaissance/bomber aircraft is set to arrive in the second half of December.

The other big update is that an enhancement to the Flying Circus map, covering all three volumes, will also be coming with five seasonal variations. Those are spring, summer, early fall, late fall, and winter. Attached screenshots show off the different variations.

Work will continue with the update saying that they will be doing the remaining, land based, Flying Circus aircraft in the next volume. That includes aircraft like the Sopwith Pup and 1-half Strutter as well as the Albatross D.III and Fokker E.III.

IAR and WACO CG-4 coming too

The next update is also bringing with it two more WWII aircraft with the long awaited IAR80/81 project finally coming to fruition. This project has been in the works for a couple of years now with a third party and I’m looking forward to finally having a chance to fly it in the sim. To the developers credit, it appears that this iteration of the IAR will include virtually all of the significant modifications to the type covering IAR80 through 81c.

Then we have a bit of an oddity for the series and one that I think might offer an interesting experience. The WACO CG-4 is a glider and one used on a few high profile operations including during Operation Overlord. The aircraft model was created by Ugra Media (they are back to calling them Yugra again in the text) and 1CGS have done some programming too that makes the cable work. Even in multiplayer!

It is also interesting that in the multiplayer mode, full interaction will be possible: one pilot will be able to fly a C-47A “Skytrain” and the other a towed glider. There will be a lift cabin as the main cargo hatch, a braking parachute, and different types of cargo: general cargo, jeep, and paratroopers with weapons.

I know that won’t excite some combat sim pilots but I’m interested in trying that out and finding out what kind of experience is possible. I have a few friends that are already looking to find several of us to get a massed flight together…so it will be interesting to see what kind of experience this will offer and how it will be priced.

No pre-order is available yet on the glider but the IAR-80/81 remains on pre-order for now.

    As opposed to what-based?

The glider is tailor-made for drunken MP landing competitions.

    1. What I take that to mean is that we won’t see the two seaplane options or the channel map that were offered in Rise of Flight. The Felixstow looked like a wild ride but I never got a chance to try it.

Drunking MP landing competitions sounds fun ☺️

      1. To me that’s just stupid. What’s the point of remaking Rise of Flight which had 3 fronts when we are just going to get the Western Front? Makes me feel that the devs were better off giving the RoF source code to another team like with the case of IL-2 1946.

I would totally buy a FC installment which had the Channel or Eastern Front.

      2. I do think not doing the Channel map is a bit of a loss as I always preferred that map for the scenery and the ability to do some fun aerobatics over Dover. The East Front map never seemed to get much attention with the Rise of Flight community but my perception may be off on that. Did you spend much time with that map?

      3. I didn’t spend that much time on the Tarnopol map primarily because there was hardly any SP content for it (there was the Ilya Muromets campaign but no Career), but it was something new and I am glad we got it. There was just no time to spend adding a Career and other SP content at the least in 2015 when the devs had to fully commit themselves to BoS and BoM. We’ve never seen a WW1 Eastern Front flight beyond RoF so I’m hopeful we can get it for FC.

  2. The Waco and IAR, I do not think they will be a great seller, why do they not create the Yak3?

    1. One thing 1CGS has stuck closely to is only offering aircraft that can fit an existing scenario. For a Yak-3 we’d need a 1944 or 1945 eastern front scenario and we don’t have one.

If I were them I would have run Great Battles out one more battle and do just that. To wrap the series up in a nice bow. And more slowly commit to a next gen title behind it. I suspect more folks would have been happy that way. But I’m armchair project managing at this point and I don’t know the realities.

      1. I would agree, but….Ta-152? Sometimes I wonder about their business decisions.

The ‘land-based’ line did intrigue me, but you are likely correct in that it did not mean anything.

Waco for drunken fun! Many moons ago when I flew with a squad we would match off half and half in a TB-3 battle. No one could hit anything as we were all in hysterics and almost always ended in a ramming.

      2. Yeah the Ta-152 is an edge case in this. Plausible on the Rhineland campaign but historically just the one battle with a Tempest in a low altitude turn fight that I’m aware of. It’s more of a shot than what the Yak-3 has… sadly.

I loved TB-3 fights. I was in one coop where we had a duel. Every station had a gunner on it and we fought each other with hilarious results.

  3. My guess is that they surely would love to do another WWII scenario within the scope of the existing IL-2 GB but that they simply lack the resources because of the new project.
But anyway … to me the WACO Glider is looking to be become exactly what the Normandy D-Day scenario still needed !

    1. How? The campaigns aren’t dynamic, so what possible impact could it have on the static battlefield.

      Maybe MP?

      Like

      1. @CAP. Not impact on the battlefield because AFAIK non of the ‘static’ campaigns would be impacted by any individual asset. But because we all saw the D-Day movies (and know history of cource) … the landings and the … parachutes and … the gliders. This makes the Normandy DLC/theathre more real (to me).

      2. Yeah I like the sounds of that. Hopefully they can be worked into various scenarios to achieve that goal.

    2. I mean the dynamic campaigns aren’t actually dynamic, they’re all SP instanced missions. It might have a use in MP but I have no idea how that would work. The whole concept of it is wacked due to the aforementioned. It feels like a weird cash grab and only reinforces my opinion of how out of touch the PM and devs are.

      1. I think nearly everyone knows that at this point and I think what simfan is getting at is that gliders played a huge role in the Normandy invasion and their inclusion may help to bolster the immersion and feeling of the Overlord undertaking. Depending on how well it works, it may do that for me as well. There’s stuff we don’t know about yet with this Collector Plane.

      2. They indeed made several DLC that could be called cashgrabs like planes with the teardrop pits, but this WACO must have been quite a bit of reimagining play mechanics !? It is no game changer, but I never expected this after the preannouncement of the new project!

  4. I can imagine a lot of scenarios for the glider even offline. I just think for operations inside overlord like operation Tonga, landing close to the Pegasus bride. And it’s not only the Normandy map, remind market garden on Rheinland map. In multiplayer I like to think about TAW where different cargo and paradrop missions already exists. What makes me a bit belly pain is the fact have no German glider to create similar tasks for both sides online. So far I simply don’t know there was any German glider operation on any map we already have 🤔
