The DCS: F-14 Tomcat hasn’t been forgotten even as Heatblur pushes towards releasing the F-4 Phantom. A few smaller updates are coming in including the addition of the visual model for the TARPS pod and some other visual tweaks. Let’s have a look!

New updates for Tomcat

It’s not a long update but the latest news out of Heatblur does give us some indication of where things are going with the DCS: F-14 Tomcat. First up, a new visual update will include the addition of the TARPS reconnaissance pod. Heatblur report that, for now, its a visual update with the pod being something that can be equipped on the jet in a near future update. They state that gameplay features to make recon fun and engaging will come later.

The rest of the update report that, once the F-4E is out the door, they will be actively working to unify codebases and porting new technologies to the Tomcat from the Phantom. Some of those updates are visual including new vapour efforts, new character animations and customizations, interactive manual and Jester V2. These are all features from the F-4 Phantom that look to be making their way back to F-14. Fantastic news.

Heatblur ends their update inferring that they intend to finish the major goals of the project up with the release of the long awaited early F-14A and new RWR technology.

  1. Very cool. Nice to have a good plane now that will still be seeing quality updates.

  2. I just can’t get excited for the F-4. Definitely gonna buy it, but it just feels like I’m going to have to WORK at liking it.

Improvements to the F-14, esp back-ported from the new platform underlying F-4…? Yeah, baby – BRING IT!!!!

    1. I’m the opposite. I purchased the ‘Cat but struggled to learn or enjoy it. The F-4 is for me more interesting.

My time will be split between the F-16 and F-4.

      1. I can’t imagine where the F-4 is not going to be any easier to get comfy with than the F-14 was (I like to fly it, not so much fight in it), unless Jester 2.0 really is a colossal leap forward.

    1. Not easier, just more interesting. Arguably possibly harder. I just don’t have the time for much of this and so the F-4 I felt a bit more my Cold War ride.

      1. I’m getting the F-4 because I want the new high-tech flightsim toys and eye candy. I’ll learn a solid 25% of the systems, how to takeoff and land, drop some guided weapons, fart around with Jester, and that will be my fun. Same as with the Tomcat.

I enjoy high-tech flightsim coolness, and I’m fine with just knowing enough about the F-4 in order to have some fun.

  5. It’s interesting if all these features they plan to port from F-4 to F-14 would then be ported to Viggen (when applicable). It would be cool, but, TBH, I doubt it, as Viggen is essentially feature-complete. On the other hand, it recieved a visual update no so long ago…
