A big update from 1CGS is out tonight with version 5.201 including the full release of Flying Circus Vol 3 as well as the new CG-4A Glider and the IAR-80/81. Here’s what you need to know.

Flying Circus Vol 3 officially released

A cinematic trailer is out to alongside today’s update with a showcase of the aircraft and scenery of Flying Circus Vol 3. The latest volume has been releasing bit by bit over the course of the year and has 8 aircraft as well as a revised map for the whole of the series. That map includes more details, more points of interest, and support for five seasons – spring, summer, autumn, late autumn and winter are all represented.

Today’s release also marks the launch of the R.E.8 two-seater reconnaissance and bomber aircraft.

Waco Glider

A key part of the the D-Day invasion was the CG-4A glider. Used to deploy troops, vehicles and supplies in the opening phases of the invasion and at several other points, the CG-4A is the series first glider and the first aircraft to be towed by another aircraft. It’s different and I look forward to trying it out.

IAR finally!

It’s been a long wait but the first half of the IAR project has arrived in the latest patch. Today we’re getting the “short” version of the IAR80 and 81. The Romanian fighter came in both short and long variants and the aircraft’s third party developer and 1CGS are determined to bring us both.

The base model starts off with a battery of six 7.92mm FN Browning machine guns but other models add 13.2mm FN Browning machine guns and MG151/20 cannons to the mix as well as bombs and a fuselage mounted bomb sling for dive bombing.

Learn more about all of this right over here.

  1. Would you be able to do a speculation article for IL-2 for 2024 and beyond? Like what’s next after Normandy and Flying Circus Vol.III? I think a lot of people would appreciate you narrowing down our expectations for what’s next to come.

    Cheers!

    1. Sure! I have a recap and look forward planned for IL-2, DCS and MSFS coming up. There’s not a lot to go on with IL-2 but I will wait to publish until the last couple of days of the year as we may yet get a bit of info before the year is over. Stay tuned!

  2. Can someone post a good image of the complete map? I cannot seem to find one that shows with any detail exactly what it covers.

    1. WW1 nomans-land is still full of 2D ink spots that suggest if these are impact craters. I do not know how the looks are at the monitor but using VR it’s an immersion breaker like playing a 2005 game. BTW there are nice drawing techniques to give you the illusion to look 2D objects like being 3D.

      1. It is indeed. I know of those techniques and the sim already uses them for things like rocks on the terrain but I don’t think they can handle relief like that. The current engine doesn’t seem to handle high data terrain meshes well. Example: the Tank Crew map is still problematic even with a small zone using a higher resolution mesh.

    2. I’ll look into it. It may be that they kept on with the original plan and filled out a third sector of the map as described here (from back when Jason was still Exec Producer). https://stormbirds.files.wordpress.com/2020/12/flying_circus_map_phases_small.jpg

It also sounds like they may have touched up the whole map.

  3. The map you link to is what is now available; basicly the entire western front. This map is nicely detailed now. My only issue is that while the textures seem better with the implementation of 5 seasons they are still a lower resolution then Normandy. But once you gain some altitude they look good. Overall FC3 is worth the $ for me, not perfect but still fun. I normally prefer WW2 but WW1 dog fighting really is a blast.
