Three new aircraft are on display in the latest Flying Circus developer update. The new aircraft together with a summary of some of the work that are being done to improve the accuracy of the aircraft and address any problems as they are transferred from their original Rise of Flight engine over to the Great Battles Series are the focus. Let’s have a look!

Pup, Albatross D.III and DH.2

Six new screenshots and a bunch of new information are out today as the 1CGS team give us a little insight into the latest updates for Flying Circus. The next instalment has been talked about and the aircraft list is known although its not yet been formally announced for sale – 1CGS say as of today that these aircraft are part of an “aircraft pack” that will be released this summer.

The upgrades underway for these aircraft include the usual slate of model and texture updates from their Rise of Flight originals but there’s some other work going on as well. Fixing aerodynamic elements, engine overheating/overcooling problems, inconsistent drag values, and a “ghost” stabilizer that was apparently found on the DH.2’s physical model. All of this is leading to accuracy improvements including corrected top speeds.

The DH.2 in particular gains 15km/h to its top speed. The Sopwith Pup is also on display and apparently had similar issues and corrections being made – though nothing specific is presented today. The Albatross D.III is also on view in the latest screenshots.

Another area getting some attention is the AI which will be given new abilities to use the blip switch for taxiing.

  1. Great to see the work continuing with FC – I rarely fly it now days but have been a long time supporter of it due to its historical representation to an area that is…. well…. not well represented. I was also part of the Rise of Flight (RoF) testing team prior (and during) its release so it also has a special place in my heart.

That dates back some for sure! Rise of Flight was quite a good title there all things considered. I am glad to see that the World War I era continues to get some attention.

  2. I’ll have to try it out again. Haven’t flown FC in a good year or so. I always thought the DH2 was pretty cool.

It’s been a long time for me as well. I fully intend to spend more time with it coming up!

  3. I’m really disappointed that there will be no Channel Map and seaplanes in FC because “there are no plans”. Why are there no plans to add the Channel Map and more maps to FC, is Ugra Media taking on other tasks and doesn’t have the time to make the map and planes? The devs are just shooting themselves in the foot by not adding more maps to FC like the Channel and Tarnopol Maps. The Tarnopol Map never really got a chance because all work on RoF ended after it was released because the devs had to prioritize themselves with BoS but that doesn’t mean the Tarnopol Map can’t be successful in FC. Many people including myself would love to have more maps and aircraft added to FC.

This is my pet peeve with the devs lately in that they haven’t been very clear on the reasoning for decisions lately. Other examples include them not doing an Invasion of Sicily installment because they would have to make Naples and Rome when they don’t, adding the Bf-109G-6A/S, Spitfire Mk. XIV Teardrop Canopy, Ta-152, and WACO Glider when the Bf-110F, Pe-3 and A-20G or a flyable B-25 could have been added instead and added something new to the gameplay experience or saw a lot of action and can be used on many maps in the game.

FC is all there is for WW1 unless the WoFF guys decide to do the Eastern and Italian Fronts. Without the Channel Map then FC will at best be only as good as RoF. I wonder if the RoF code could be given away to other teams so that the Channel Map and Eastern Front in RoF can be further expanded upon given that the IL-2 GBs code has greatly evolved since 2015 and a new game engine is being made.

    1. Give away the code would also show that FC is just a cheap RoF swap and give access to the BoX/FC/Tank game engine.
The whole Sikorsky game was a big mistake that did cost lots of labor and financial resources, think the same is counting for the waterplanes. For the Italian front you want the alps. WW1 in the Alpes is not that easy to program, not only the AI for the wind direction calculations, but also, if flying though the mountains you like to see the details of rocks and depths. Looking at the Uglymedia results on the FC nomans land I have doubts Uglymedia can make that to an acceptable level.
Do not get me wrong I did purchase all the ROF’s DLC’s, the Sikorsky game and was on preorder of the ROF game. Only 10 y after RoF release I did except a next level WW1 flysim from Uglymedias FC and not an uninspired RoF swap into the BoX game engine.

  5. FC3 is the same price as FC1 and 2, but you get less planes.
It will be interesting to see what they mean by a new “aircraft pack”, and how it’s priced because that’s essentially what the Flying Circus packages are as they all grant access to the same map.

The FC stuff is a bit perplexing for anyone who bought into Rise of Flight because it’s such a side grade and for a not insignificant amount of money. I do enjoy the greater draw distance and nicer clouds, but Rise of Flight also had more care put into other areas and the physics really aren’t significantly different.

Sorry, this is a meandering post without much of a point except that I think Flying Circus is over priced and I wonder how much of the excuse of “this is a niche product” is self inflicted and could be remedied by lowing the prices a bit, when instead, it seems that we are being asked to pay more for less product.

The similar pricing for fewer aircraft is difficult to account for, I agree. I haven’t quite figured that one out.

I do think the aircraft are decently upgraded though. Flight model tuning, 4K textures, and 3D model upgrades are not unsubstantial efforts to bring them up to par in the new engine. I don’t think sidegrade is wholly appropriate but I do understand the perspective that its similar content repackaged.
