Some news coming in to us from Eagle Dynamics on a long awaited system that we all hope arrives to DCS World sooner than later. The dynamic campaign system has a status update on what they’ve been able to do with it recently. There’s also a screenshot competition and a new UH-1 campaign. Let’s have a look!

Dynamic campaign updates

This DCS World Weekend update has spent a fair bit of time talking about the dynamic campaign system and what they are doing with it. To briefly summarize the updates, they are working on a variety of components of the system and they are continuing to do a lot of core updates to make the system work – items that extend far beyond just the dynamic campaign.

The updates include AI forces command and control including a border and frontline system, terrain navigation, and decision making system for ground forces, among others. Ground force movement work is ongoing too enabling ground forces to use terrain and roads to optimally navigate. They are also continuing to integrate air force command and control.

Another interesting feature is a navigation mesh editor that they say will allow campaign creators to adjust old terrains to suit needs. This will have affects for non dynamic campaign experiences too!

They also report updating the track recording system to take into account the details of the dynamic campaign system. This is benefiting them for testing purposes but will hopefully improve the user experience too.

All of this is good progress but I think it also highlights the long road that this continues to be. DCS World, at its core, needs to be a lot better for dynamic campaign to be a success and this affects everything from AI unit pathing to track files to terrain mesh navigation. Items that we may not consider as part of the scope of the project until they write an update like this and then it becomes clear just how much needs to be done.

Screenshots, UH-1 campaign

Two other updates coming in this weekend. First, we’ve got a new competition for DCS screenshots. The first place win gets $100 ED miles, second place gets $50 in ED miles and the third place gets $25 in ED miles. You can enter by replying to this forum post to make your submission.

Meanwhile, we have a new campaign called Peacekeeper Lebanon with the DCS: UH-1H. This narrative based campaign will have you performing troop insertions and extractions, close air support and reconnaissance. This campaign is coming soon.

For all of this and more, read the latest DCS World Weekend News update!

  1. DCS dynamic campaign or Star Citizen? Which first?

Both are the Duke Nuken Forevers of modern simulation gaming.

    Sigh. Back to BMS.

Definitely both will be long waits. Two different issues as I see it. DCS’ core is sorely lacking and dynamic campaign, to work, means solving a backlog of core updates while they develop the system. It’ll be a while!

Star Citizen suffers from extreme scope creep. They keep diving deeper and wider at the same time. It’s never going to be done unless they wrangle that.

      Long waits for sure!

    2. I love this post! Between the comparison to Star Citizen, Duke Nukem Forever reference, and back to the BMS comment, I feel like we would be best curmudgeon friends LOL

  2. Wake me up when dynamic campaign actually has a release date. I honestly don’t care about anything ED has to say about anything else.

My trust and faith in DCS has taken a massive hit since Razbam decided to screw over everyone who bought the F15E. A Razbam employee even said the radar dying was a deadmans switch and is supposedly normal in development, which it is not and just goes to show their unprofessional nature.

The confrontation between ED & Razbam is quite the soap opera. I’m not sure who’s to blame, but there are quite a few credible tidbits of information floating around that indicate neither party is behaving as they reasonably should.

In the meantime, I just have too much fun flying DCSW to be overly concerned with the drama that always seems to be bubbling just beneath the surface.

That’s a really good strategy! Otherwise it drags everything down.

I’m still hoping that maybe we’ll see some sort of resolution. Or maybe RAZBAM settles and sells it to ED or something along those lines. It’s optimistic in a grim situation but there are some ways this might end up ok for all of us on the customer side. No denying the ugly side of it now.

It has soured quite a few on the whole of the platform from what I’ve heard. I’m still hoping that they can sort out the dispute but there are many layers.

I too read about the deadman’s switch on the radar and was surprised.

      1. I’d honestly rather be done with Razbam all together and have them sell their modules to ED and never hear from them again. I’m just sick of their antics. That way Harrier, Mirage, and F15E at the very least will always get a patch to make them work

  3. Thanks for update. Yea, yawn…wake me up when dynamic campaign is done. I still can’t reconcile a single coder was able to make the masterly Falcon 4 dynamic campaign way, way back in 1999, and it seems such an interminable chore for a 21st century company of DCS’ size and all its resources (compared to a single coder, that is). I can’t get over that. What’s wrong with today’s developers? But I suppose good they re finally working on it but ….whenever. Meanwhile, plenty of other modules to master; got plenty of time to master them by the look of the above update.

Frankly, I am still annoyed at the F15 thing; so, I bought it but it is not, for the present, going to get better. I mean it’s already good but I do have an expectation things will be fixed. Am I right that DCS are still selling it full price in their store? With no buyer beware indication? Don’t think that’s quite cricket if so. I would definitely get my money back on the F15 if there was a clear way to do that, rather than having to jump through 10 hoops, spin on your head and do a jig. Failing that, I just hope, like most of us, a resolution will be found in due course.

Thanks for the updates and your site. My go to spot for keeping up to date on things flight simulation.

Hey Apoll! Thanks for the comments and your readership. Always love to hear from folks!

They are still selling it. It has been moved to the bottom of page 5 instead of on page 1 where it was before – typically they have in order of release. That’s a token effort but probably not enough.

I continue to hope as well! I’ve not spent as much time with the jet as I’ve wanted to but if things go well then I’ll be back into it I’m sure.
