A new Brief Room episode has come out titled “What’s new?” and its focused on the flight modeling for IL2 Korea. The episode features lead engineer Roman “Gavrick” Kovalenko who goes into a little bit of detail on what the new sim is doing with their flight modeling and how it has evolved from earlier sims.

What’s new?

We’ve learned a few new things about the IL-2 Korea with this new video. First, flight modeling is a key piece of the project and they are taking what they’ve learned with Great Battles and moving things up a notch. Their advanced flight model, as they are calling it, will have more elements simulated. It’s part of the reason why they are moving to a new product because they say it would be difficult to implement this with the 100 or so legacy airplanes that they currently support.

Among the changes, handling of aircraft will be more realistic in part because they are going to be more accurately simulating how control forces affect the handling of the aircraft. They talk quite a bit about how Great Battles assumes that nearly everyone was using a short throw spring loaded joystick, however, some are now using longer throw sticks so the compromise is that they will provide a neutral option ideal for long throw sticks and a custom, per airplane, curves profile that is more intended for show throw sticks. Interesting!

Other discussions talk about aerodynamics calculation changes including refinements to how the system sees wings and fuselages. The result their aiming for is even more natural aircraft feel.

Great Battles talk

A the 4 minute mark, they briefly detour from talking about Korea and talk about Great Battles. They report that they are developing a DLC package for Great Battles that will cover Odessa from 1941 through 1944 and likely include Lenningrad around the same time as well with eight aircraft planned. Presumably this add-on will cover some of the previously talked about aircraft though I don’t think we know what all eight are.

A developer diary update will reveal all of the details though we don’t know exactly when just yet. Waiting to hear more!

  1. I’d say there will be a lot more aircraft coming to Great Battles such as the La-7, Yak-3, Tu-2, IL-10, Bf-110 F-2, 10, Fw-190 A-9 and Ju-87 D-5, the planes they mentioned back in Briefing Room Episode 3. Though an IL-10 and Fw-190 A-9 may indicate that another unannounced late war map might be in the works.

    1. The La-7 and Yak-3 for sure. And the I-153 too. We’ve heard about a Ju-87 variant as you mentioned too. That leaves a few options open. The IL-10 and Tu-2 have so far been discussed in context of Korea rather than Great Battles but there’s certainly possibility for crossover though I suspect it may not happen. A Fw190A-9 would be curious!

      1. Crossover seems unlikely as they’d effectively have to develop them twice, but I’m sure that lots of gamers will complain about having to pay twice for them.

      2. Yeah for both of those reasons there’s a fair bit of cause for why it probably won’t happen. Of course if it did, I’d be fine with it. More planes!

  2. I’m actually excited for the Odessa map/campaign.

The He-114 and or Ar-196 makes sense as they were in both the Luftwaffe and Romanian inventories and saw extensive action in ’41 and ’44, utilized primarily for shipping interdiction. On that note however, given how prevalent that theater was with regards to anti-shipping missions, the devs are going to have to add aerial torpedo stores to new and existing aircraft as well as mission sets and parameters.

This (torpedo bombers) is something that’s been sorely missing since Kuban released. That was a real missed opportunity, IMHO. I’m actually excited for the Odessa map/campaign.

    1. I’d love to see some aerial dropped torpedoes. Definitely a missing piece of the puzzle for great battles.

Love the aircraft suggestions too. Wonder if we’ll get at least one of those in the mix.

  3. Nice to know they are doing a bit more for GB, however… I’d much prefer a Murmansk map, and that has virtually no chance now.

    1. I fondly remember the IL-2 1946 Murmansk map. Very cool map (pardon the pun). Don’t think we’ll see it but the Karelia/Lenningrad map would be pretty cool too.

      1. Yes, I remember the old IL2 map, that’s why I want to see it in GB… As well as Russian and German missions, it was great to fly the old Hurricane IIb as an RAF pilot… The first variant of the P-40 was about as well!

  4. i would much prefer GB receiving the new engine, but thats not gonna happen either.

    1. The point they’ve made a few times I think now is that at some point they can’t really press forward without either breaking the old stuff and spending ages redoing it all or starting from scratch and making something better. I get their desire to push something new but also feel sentimental about Great Battles.

      1. Honest question here from someone who owns GB but has never really been able to spend much time with it. Is it really that dated, to the point where most people would be willing to wait years and years and spend hundreds of dollars to get it all remade with a slightly better flight model, a decent-but-not-generational improvement in graphics, and a few extra features? It does suck a little to see the current premier WWII sim get set off to the side though.

      2. The current engine is behind in a few ways. In one example, it has no PBR based rendering. Something every other sim has been doing for a while. They managed to do some really good art design that largely avoided it as an issue over the short term but over the long term its become industry standard and the sim doesn’t support it. They could probably work it in but they’d have to recreate nearly every texture in the sim. Use that as one example among potentially many (flight, damage, the base technology for the UI, etc.) and you start to see why technologically its a complicated issue.

We’ve been through these generational changes with the series before so one more seems … expected? Going to Korea has been a pretty good way to change generations while offering something new and not immediately outdating the previous sim. Great Battles content development is still happening so its not quite as dead as I thought it might end up being.

  5. It’s confirmed that the planeset will feature four early-war planes, one mid-war, and three late-war aircraft (according to LukeFF). So far, the following planes are confirmed: Yak-3, La-7, I-153, and Ju 87 D-5. This leaves us with three early-war planes and one late-war plane yet to be revealed.

The Tu-2 seems like a likely candidate to fill the remaining late-war slot.

As for the three missing early-war planes, the possibilities get more interesting. Rumania played a massive role during the Siege of Odessa in 1941 and operated a wide variety of aircraft of French, German, Polish, British, and Italian origin. The Italian Air Force also participated and provided air support during the battle. This leaves us with a large list of potential aircraft, such as the Macchi C.200, CR.42, Bristol Blenheim, He 112, SM.79 Sparviero, PZL P.11/24, PZL.37 Łoś, Potez 633, and many others! There’s also the Soviets: I-16 Type 29, Su-2 (M-88), Il-4, DB-3, Tupolev SB, MiG-3 series 10, etc!!!

    MANY aircraft to choose from!

My money is on the Macchi C.200 (Italian), He 112 (Rumanian), and Su-2 (Soviet)

    1. Lots of interesting choices in there. Worth exploring! I hope that the Finnish Map team (with the Lenningrad extension) get their wish for a B-239. That’d be nice to have in the mix!
