As we head into a new year I find it’s always a good idea to have a look around, take stock, and make some adjustments where needed. A growing feeling I’ve had is that the site needs a bit of a refresh. Here’s what I’m thinking about right now.

Sprucing things up

Stormbirds turned eight this past April and that means that in a little over four months it’s going to be nine! Hard to believe! Doing the same project for nine years is a long time and while my commitment overall hasn’t changed, I do feel the need to change things up a bit.

One of the changes I’m working on is a refresh of the visual theme for Stormbirds. I’ve been using the same overall look and feel since the blog launched in 2016 and the same logo since April of 2020. Many have complimented it on the visual appeal and overall look over the years so I’ve been hesitant to change it. And as much as we all fear change, sometimes its a good thing.

I want to offer some alternative options on how the news is displayed. I still fully intend to offer the latest news, in order, on the top of the main page. But I’d also like to offer some features that I see with some of the “magazine” style home pages where you can browse by themes. I don’t want to split it up too much but I can see streams devoted to combat flight sims, civil flight sims and other sims being something that could be on offer.

I am also facing some issues with how ads and ad space is divided up with the current theme. Ad revenue, one of the key ways to keep the blog hosting going, has dropped off recently. I’d like to make them a little less distracting but still visible and relevant. They are, as they say, a necessary evil and the revenue, while not a lot, helps quite a bit.

In the new year I’m also thinking about new video projects (haven’t done one of those for a bit) and maybe even getting back into hosting the odd podcast. Sometimes you need to try new things or mix things up a bit from the past and so 2025 may be one of those years.

None of this is certain but I wanted to let everyone know that I may be putting a fresh coat of paint on the site. But only once I’m happy with what I come up with.

Of course, I love to hear what you folks think so if there’s something you like about the site or don’t like about the site I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. I’ve already heard from some of you that you like the product roadmaps and that you still want to see a stream of all of the latest news up top.

  1. I’m new here, so it’s still fresh for me and I like the clean look. I’m sure whatever you come up with will be just as awesome.

Glad you posted about ads because I run adblockers by default and never really thought about it. I’ve disabled my adblockers for this site, hope it helps in some small way.

    1. Thanks for being a reader and a commenter! Appreciate sharing this hobby with as many people as possible.

Appreciate the support too. I often run ad blockers too but also turn off the blocker on some sites that I frequent. I’m always thinking about how to make them visible but not too distracting. Hopefully its a good mix.

  2. I am in the same boat as DRYHEAT94, new to the site. I love the site and content.

I fly a decent amount in DCS. I love the Hornet and the helos.

  3. Hello,

I think your site is an amazing addition to the internet. It’s one of my go-to visits every time I get on the computer. I don’t think it needs any changes but you must do what you feel is best.

    Cheers,

  4. Just to let you know: You are the only blog I keep pinned in my browser. You are right between FB and Reddit. Keep up the good work.

  5. As far as I am concerned, you don’t need to change anything. I xisit your site every day and I don’t want your changes to cost you more time to maintain the site, for the danger then exists that at a certain moment you will decide that it costs you too much time and that you have to discontinue your site. This site is the only one I visit daily and iit is my main source of information on flight sims.

  6. As a longtime reader amd big fan, a few suggestions for the future:

    1. – Keep up the positive vibe. Being friendly and fair minded is a big part of the appeal here. You’re close to Year 9 on the Interwebs and your credibility is still firmly intact. That’s no small thing.

    2. – Remember that many of us are (semi) old farts. Don’t change to please them young whipper-snappers.

    3. – I’ve only bugged you about this 100 times, so lets make it 101. Get Ko-Fi or some kind of one-time payment option to support the site. Multi-month contracts to show support aren’t for everyone. I think the site is missing out because of this. With a one-time payment option, the reader can easily drop a few bucks whenever. And if it’s easy, it’s apt to happen again. And then maybe again.

    4. – You should be a guest on Deephack’s show. Even just audio for a bit. He often features news from your site and always gives you full credit and speaks very highly of this place.

Love the site. Thank you. 🙂

    1. All great feedback and comments! Will definitely keep them all in mind. Especially the Ko-Fi or some system like that. I know you’ve been a proponent for that for a while (and you’re not alone). I started to look into it and then got distracted! I’ll look into it some more!

    2. Thanks for reminding me about Deephack! (Until I saw his face, I assumed he was of Indian descent and was playing on the name Deepak :D). Anyway, I haven’t seen anything he’s done for ages, bloody algorithms make the strangest choices sometimes. I will go and seek out his channel on Youtube again.

      1. Yes the same thing happens to me. For a little while I had Deephack’s videos coming up and then they fell off my feed again.

  7. I 100% agree with Canada One on the Ko-fi inclusion. Patreon is not really my thing but just being able to throw a few bucks your way from time to time would be much easier. I also agree that your site is wonderful as is and I love the simplicity of it. Your writing is all that matters to me because I am a huge fan of your even keeled approach to the news and inevitable drama that arises from it. You connect us to our hobby from a users point of view and I love that little break from everything else that reading one of your articles gives me.

  8. looks like I’m with everyone else here – the site looks nice as is but what really matters to me is your consistent level-headed coverage! A one-time donation option with PayPal support would be great.

Thank you for doing what you do, and congratulations on another year!

  9. Adding my voice to the chorus of your fans, I really appreciate the visual quality of your site. Don’t change the color/colour or logo. If you want to add links to civil or military themed sims, perhaps simply add those to the top banner (Home-Reviews-Product Roadmaps etc). Respectfully, don’t make layout changes for the sake of change.

    1. Thanks as always!

There are some technical reasons to look for some new options. The current theme still works but it has a few issues now on the back end of it that I’m coping with but would like to try and find some solutions for. I’m hoping that the end result is not too different for me or anyone else. Still aiming to do the same overall goal. We’ll see how it goes as I work on it!

  10. Long time reader and as others have written its my go to place to get sim related news (I used to go to some other site forums but grew tired of the toxicity that existed and of course how easy it is to miss things with a forum format).

If you personally want to get a fresh look – sure go for it (for you its been nearly nine years) but overall the format of how things are presented works really well IMHO so I wouldn’t go changing it too much. You have categories and the ability to search if I want to go back and find something but to be honest that doesn’t happen often.

I like how there is interaction with the other community readers via the comments – sometimes I think it would be good to have a forum/discord to get those discussions flowing a little easier but then stop that thought as I actually think comments work well for the article approach you have.

If you want less ads then the ideas about Ko-fi sounds like a great idea.

    1. Appreciate your continued readership and your comments too! Always glad to have folks sharing their overall love of simming on here.

I have considered a Discord but there’s obvious work that goes into that and I’m not sure if I want the extra headache that might come with that.

I’ll be looking into Ko-fi for sure and maintaining the overall goal of the site. Appreciate the comments on this too… always good to hear how folks are feeling!

  11. I come here for the content (AND the screenshots!), not the graphics 🙂

Personally, I fly in most of the major sims – even still the occasional flight in Prepar3D 😉 – so I like the free-flow mix of news as it happens.

That said, I can see value in just a bit more compartmentalization like you’ve said, e.g., news vs editorials, or an easy way to filter by simulator / type of flying.

But please do keep an easy way to just see it in the order posted, please 🙂

I see on another site that they have most of their ads appear on the sidebar. And they keep them simple/non-video, etc. That’s kinda cool because I do like to see non-intrusive ads for products relevant to flight sim.

Anyhow, you’ve done a great job so far, so I have faith that this next iteration will turn out to be just fine, as well. 🙂

    1. Thanks for the great comments! Yeah I don’t want to lose the primary goal of offering a mix of sim related content and offering it in order.

Putting the ads (and some other relevant info) into a sidebar is one of the things that I’d like to try and do. Not possible with the current theme but I think it’d simplify the reading if I could and still offer up the appropriate visibility for ads. I wish I could get more relevant ads to simming in the mix too. If I ever get the option for that, I will!

    1. Thanks for being a regular reader and commenter over all of these years! A little fresh coat of paint isn’t a bad thing from time to time but I don’t want to lose what makes this place this place either.

  13. I’m with your other readers here: ultimately, what counts is your great content, so the looks is secondary, but I trust your good judgment will prevail and any changes will be for the best! Thank you so much for your awesome work, keeping us informed on what really counts (flight sims) and saving us lots of time!

  14. I like how it is, but having choice of topics by sim platform or type is good. I regret that you never did an aircraft gazette on IL2: Battle of Normandy. You could collate links to “How to fly (or fight) P-51D [or other aircraft]” videos by a number of Youtube creators. Your aircraft reviews are great, and should be easily found by IL2, MSFS, DCS, etc. The project road map are of great importance with Combat Pilot, IL2 Korea, Falcon BMS, MSFS2024, all changing, updating or upcoming.

Don’t fall for the cult of the new that requires useless facelifts to appear ‘fresh’, that are common online, changing the look of social media just for change’s sake. We love what you do, and I look at your site daily to find what’s new or detailed about flight sims. Become a library where someone can find reviews of say, Falcon BMS, its aircraft, and videos from Youtube creators on every aspect of BMS, etc.

  16. I also love the existing layout but I can see your point about magazine style articles. It will be a balance, not losing your strong brand identity and also adding new features.

As a retired marketing production guy (amongst other careers! :D) I’m sure you can do it. Just make sure when you talk the designers and developers – if you’re not doing it yourself, a perfectly acceptable approach with today’s tools – you define your scope well and only permit yourself to deviate if you have a very good reason. There are usually a lot of rabbit holes and distractions to trip you up and your vision must remain paramount. But I’m blithering and I’m sure you know all that.

Looking forward to the new site!

    1. All great advice! In my professional life I’m stuck somewhere between the marketing, comms and IT teams so all of this resonates strongly with me!

The pros and cons of WordPress.com as my preferred solution is that there is a lot of flexibility but its often tied to how developed the template is. The current one hasn’t kept up with the times as well as I’d like AND of course I want to make a few adjustments.

Overall the same approach I plan to keep!

      1. Loving the new layout. It keeps the ‘feel’ of the site, whilst updating it to match more current thinking. And unlike many of these things, it feels like it was due, not just being done for the hell of it. Looking at you Microsoft Office and GMail teams. I sometimes think changes are only made because they have a team of designers and developers on the product who need to keep busy 😀 Not that I begrudge them that, I suppose.
