MicroProse and developer Triassic Games are busy updating Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age and have just dropped a Christmas dev update prior to the team signing off for a short vacation over the holidays. Let’s check in on how things are progressing!

Bug fixes, new ships, the Enterprise!

I got a chance to briefly preview Sea Power just before its launch a couple of months back. The naval combat strategy game and simulation has a fair bit of crossover with flight simming and I can’t resist the epic imagery involved when you’ve got a couple of fleets squaring off against each other with ships, aircraft, helicopters and a load of missiles and torpedoes going back and forth.

Sea Power is in early access right now and the new title is not without some bugs. Early on the sim had a terrible memory leak issue which has been partially, though not completely plugged. There are, of course, other small issues here and there that crop up.

There have been several patches and an active developer cycle underway to sort out some of the glitches but also to add more content to the mix. In addition to bug fixes, improvements, memory leak fixes, and various adjustments to the UI, AI and more specific bugs… we’ve also got some neat new things coming in.

We’ve got the Wisla and P4 Torpedo Boats and the Kondor II minesweeper. Neat!

The thing I wanted to really write about is getting another carrier in the mix. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is joining the list of assets. Launched in 1958, it was the first Nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the US Navy and served until 2012. It’s joined by USS Long Beach, a Nuclear-powered Missile Cruiser. Both ships were the only types in their class and both sported the same SCANFAR phased array radar systems requiring large flat surfaces mounted on the ships leading both to have the same distinctive cubed appearance.

Of course the Enterprise will, like the other carriers in the game, let you launch plenty of aircraft assets. I may write up a journal about one engagement in Sea Power that had me commanding A-7, A-6, and F-14s in an epic battle. Even when I’m commanding ships, I’m still “flying stuff” in my head.

  1. Still on the fence with this one. I like the looks of it but my available brain cells are busy dealing with DCS. I’ll watch a few tutorials and see if it’s within my mental snack bracket.

    1. Wolfpack345’s been doing a great series with it if you want to see some of the game in action. Less tutorial but definitely educational for me when I started playing it.

  2. This one stays on my wishlist until the price comes down to 29.99. In the meantime during this sale I picked up Regiments and Winds of Change DLC, Cold Waters, Uboat, and Scramble: Battle of Britain. I’m good for awhile.

    1. Lots of good stuff on your list there. I’ve got some more Scramble reporting due!

    2. I haven’t bought anything (yet) during this sale. I’d like a few things but they all require making new accounts or installing more DRM and I’m sick of all that.

Might just get the DCS FC3 Mig-15. Growling Sidewinder made a good video about it and it looks like fun, and very few brain cells required. 🙂

      1. Which ones are asking for new drm measures to be installed? Worrying trend if it’s happening a lot.

      2. Far Cry 6 has DRM and Doom Eternal requires an account. Always a fan of the Far Cry series (loved Primal), and though I didn’t expect to like Doom 2016, it was good mindless fun now and then.

      3. Ubisoft and Electronic Arts are off my list. The kernel level anti-cheats/Denuvo/launchers/accounts are just ridiculous. I don’t want any of that and should have the option to opt-out unless I play multiplayer. EA has gone as far as adding it to their older games, which have made the games no longer work for many people because their kernel level anti-cheat is broken. Stay away from those 2 companies for sure.
