Two updates to mention coming in from the 1C Game Studios developers. The team are currently working on IL-2 Korea and have recently shown off the latest work on the MiG-15 cockpit as well as released a 45-minute long video describing some of the flight modeling effects that they are building into the new sim.

A look at the MiG’s cockpit

We’ve got new work in progress images of IL-2 Korea’s MiG-15 cockpit. Its not yet been textured but the lighting of the rendering shows us many of the finer details added to the cockpit. The news article about it goes into some detail on the various systems represented in the cockpit.

They make special mention of the German KG-12 style stick, known as the R-1 stick, that was used in the aircraft. There’s also the ASP-3N gyroscopic gunsight, radio altimeter, barometric altimeter, speed, Mach and climb rate indicators all called out.

For the full description, visit the IL-2 Korea website.

Jets and props

This 45-minute video is focused mostly on describing how they are simulating propeller and jet aircraft in the sim. The big and small differences between the two propulsion types will be on display here.

There are also some discussions about how weapon recoil, ammunition, and other factors will impact the aircraft particularly as weapons are fired.

They also talk about the F9F Panther and the F4U Corsair and briefly mention that there will be some sort of carrier focused DLC package that will let you experience landing on aircraft carriers with these two aircraft. Keeping with the theme, they seem excited that we’ll be able to experience both types of propulsion and how they impact the carrier approach.

Finally, they do seem to be having some sort of gag going on in the background with a trenchcoat wearing third person walking around in the background and briefly handing off a red file folder at the start of the presentation. Then returning again at the very end. Not sure what’s going on there but I suppose we’ll learn soon enough!

  2. The US built a large number of aircraft carriers during WW II, many of which were not completed in time of the war, but which served in Korea. However, some of them served in both.

My guess is that this DLC will feature carriers that served in both wars, so they can be (partially) reused for the Pacific modules (although some carriers got major modifications between the wars).

The USS Bataan seems like a good choice, as it was involved in the Invasion of the Mariana Islands, Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Okinawa. And in Korea it was deployed three times, with plenty of ground attack sorties by Corsairs.

The Bataan is also a converted cruiser, and I have a bit of a soft spot for these early carriers that were based on non-carrier ships.

Another carrier that served in both wars was the USS Essex, the first carrier of the Essex-class, which is the 20th century’s most numerous class of large warships. Because so many were made, they are one of the most recognizable types of carriers and it should be relatively easy to make more of them, since they all share the same basic design.

In Korea, Essex was the flagship for Carrier Division 1 and Task Force 77, and after the war it made a publicity-tour to Europe. So that makes her pretty iconic. She also was the first carrier to use the F2H Banshee jet aircraft for combat missions, although I don’t know whether 1CGS plan to model that plane.

Interestingly, USS Essex almost participated in the Bay of Pigs invasion with the plane markings removed, but Kennedy got cold feet at the last minute.

Other dual-war options are the USS Corregidor and the USS Bon Homme Richard.

In any case, it is a very good sign that they announced this DLC. It suggests that their initial development of carriers went very well, so they are confident that they can deliver them relatively soon.

    1. they did say before when pacific was on the table for GB that they wonted to do Okinawa, so it would make sense to do ships that can be use in both korea and there

  3. The man in the trenchcoat delivered the secret documents about flight aerodynamics of props and jets. This kind of data was rated top secret when the jet age took over in the 1950ies.

They are definitely on the right track without overpromising and too much scope creep.

We’re already getting the La-11 so that wish is covered. https://stormbirds.blog/2025/02/15/new-il-2-korea-dev-blog-focuses-on-la-11-cockpit/

      1. I apologize I was not paying enough attention. The La-11 coming to Korea: IL-2 Series means one less thing to wish for now. I think I’ll like the La-11. Oh, and thanks for the link.

  6. I hope we see more variants of the F-86 Sabre within the next few years. Right now, if I understand correctly they are going to do the F-86A first. But I would also like to see the F-86E and the F-86F as well. I’m sure many IL-2 players would too.
