I work hard to try and keep up with the latest flight sim news but this one I missed. Back on March 20, Jason Williams and the Combat Pilot team provided us with Developer Diary 15 with a look at the float plane A6M2 variant and some other neat details. Lets have a look!

A bit of everything

We’ve got some new images coming out of the Combat Pilot team and one of them is a new variant of the A6M2 Zero that they are working on. The float plane A6M2-N going by the Allied codename of “Rufe” has just had its floats attached. There are other small differences between the standard A6M2 and this one which aren’t in yet but you can see it coming along.

Another project underway is the M3 3-inch anti-aircraft gun used by the Marine Corps crews at Midway. Here we have a video animation showing off its ability to be folded up for travel. Cool!

Another visual project being shown off is the addition of all of the motor launches and rubber boats on the sim’s carriers. Here we’ve got a half dozen images showing off various implementations. Aircraft carriers really are picking up a ton of details!

Other Combat Pilot news

Also part of the last developer diary was word that progress is being made on the physics for the aircraft.

In other development news, we continue to work on our EntropyFM physics and landing gear physics. To land on carriers in a believable fashion you need a realistic physics-based solution.

With so much of this sim focused on carrier aviation, this seems like a good thing for them to spend some development time on. They also are working on the gun and ammo system for the sim and future updates will give us more details there.

Also wanted to mention that Combat Pilot has been confirmed for FSExpo 2025 in Providence, Rhode Island. The latest version of Combat Pilot will be there for people to try out!

Finally, the Combat Pilot 2025 Wall Calendars are still available for $9.99 USD.

For the rest, check out the latest developer diary!

It’s a really intriguing project, and looks promising.

I don’t know but I think Jason is very well in-tune with the community. Any time we see an airplane in a flight sim… we want to fly it! I’m betting it will be eventually if not at first.

  3. Combat pilot has a long way to go but I believe they will make a great first impression once it is ready to be released if all goes according to plan. Whenever it will be released I do not know but my best guess is that it will be released by 2030.

  4. That’s great and all but…it’s ‘Combat Pilot’ not ‘Combat Lifeboat’. Could we not have an EA with – you know, aircraft – and small boats later?

I wouldn’t focus on the work of the 3D modelers too much. They love to add details and the Unreal engine lets you do some wild things now thanks to some of its core technologies.

A lot of the significant progress is the under the hood programming which they’ve talked about but they can’t really show us in a developer diary. Rest assured they are doing those things too!
