1C Game Studios latest Brief Room episode is focused on systems. In the 25-minute video, the team talks about their efforts to improve the detail and fidelity of the aircraft systems and the associated damage model for it.
Modeling systems for the new sim
The episode talks about some key aircraft systems. Pneumatic, electrical and hydraulics are some of the key pieces of any aircraft and so this time around in the new IL-2 Korea sim they are doing a system where you have generators, i.e. an electrical generator, and consumers which would be your electrical systems that need power to function. In the new system, you can damage a component or a wire and the systems at the other end of it will cease the function.
They mention some interesting effects from this. So a damaged generator may start dropping voltage and that will control logic on things like lightbulbs which might dim when there isn’t enough power to keep them fully lit. Cool!
The new sim will have fuel management too with the ability to turn on and off fuel lines so that a damaged tank might drain but can be isolated from the rest of the systems. External fuel tanks can be dropped.
They also talk about the start-up of various aircraft systems. In Great Battles, these were largely a scripted animation while in IL-2 Korea the systems will come to life and function as they should because of the introduction of power or fuel or some other piece to the puzzle.
Editor’s note: I don’t think that means that we won’t necessarily have an auto-start system. Just that the functions of the aircraft, such as the F-51’s flaps raising up once hydraulics are turned on, will not be a scripted moment but one that happens because of the associated sub systems.
They report that the level of systems detail goes down to the individual gauge displays and their pointers. The pointers will shake (as shown at 7:51) and move around according to the forces acting on them.

They say that some players will want to fiddle with the different controls and others will want to get to the rest of the gameplay. It looks like IL-2 Korea will aim to split the difference – somehow!
Another feature mentioned is the ability to damage (and shred) wheels. Its shown off in a short video (around 15:51).

They confirm that radio beacons will be in IL-2 Korea, just as they were in Great Battles, however, there will be more controls. Some of those controls are going to be managed by what looks to be an entirely new tool-tip system with a new menu control that can simplify interactions with the aircraft. Some commands can be managed without default keybindings.

Another question was asked about how the damage model works and reportedly they will be using a much more part specific system for just about everything. In Great Battles they were still using probability charts based on hitting certain zones whereas in Korea it will be about hitting the specific part that controls a specific function… the control cables for ailerons is used in the visual.

Some interesting stuff revealed in this latest episode. If you’re interested in it, give it a watch above for a little more expansion on the details.
