Jumping into a whole new DCS World module in this next flight journal! This time out I’m in the Polychop Simulations DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. I’ve been interested in flying this helicopter for ages but just hadn’t had the time to get into it. After a quick familiarization flight, I made my own training mission just to get a feel for some of the weapons and the flight dynamics and this is how things are looking after a first flight!

Getting airborne

After a quick cold and dark familiarization with the DCS: OH-58D, I did what I always do and set myself up with a very quick mission just to get a feel for the helicopter. My sortie took me from a helicopter base in the eastern side of the DCS: Afghanistan map over a built up area and into a mountain pass where I’d setup some static trucks on the road. The mission wasn’t designed to be challenging, just interesting enough to try things out.

After bringing the Kiowa into a hover, I pulled back on the collective and got the helicopter airborne.

I’m not sure if its just the years of experience starting to make me more comfortable with helicopters or its just the Kiowa being relatively easy to fly but despite a few spicy moments I managed to get the Kiowa stabilized and ready to fly.

This was not my first flight in it and I have to report that I did have a bit of trouble on the first flight. Most of that was trim related and I learned through some searching that you may need to go into the DCS control panel and turn off force feedback (default on) if you don’t have a FFB controller.

Off to the target zone

Back to the sortie at hand, after a little goofing around, it was time to get on task and so I took the helicopter up to the north west following a major road through the settlements in the area.

On my right pylon, I had equipped a rocket pod with HE rockets. On the left, a .50cal heavy machine gun. Nothing fancy, nothing requiring the MMS (mast mounted sight) just yet. Just point and shoot.

Once arriving at the waypoint I located the trucks on the road where I had placed them. I armed the left pylon with the .50cal and opened up on the first target.

The sights on the Kiowa are…. primitive. It’s basically a pen mark on the windscreen but it and the tracers off of the .50cal are good enough to walk your shots onto the target with a reasonable degree of precision at this close range.

I picked off a couple of trucks with this method. Time to switch it up! Went to the right pylon where the rocket pod is and let loose with a couple of shots.

Surprised with the accuracy of my shot, I managed to get it on target in the first go.

After that, I fired a few more rockets and some more .50cal and before long there were large smoke columns everywhere in the target zone and all of my test targets were destroyed. Mission accomplished.

And fin

After that, all it took was a quick jaunt back to the helicopter base and a landing.

This was the moment of truth, could I land this thing?

And the answer? A surprising yes! I’ve crashed a lot of DCS helicopters on landing and awkwardly landed most of the rest of them. But this time, I got it down more or less right on the mark. Wow!

I think I and the Kiowa are going to get along just fine!

Up next in the training syllabus is to get acquainted with the nav systems, the MMS, and then on to the Hellfire and APKWS rockets.

  1. Looks like a nice chopper but it’s the only one I don’t have and probably won’t get. Not enough brain cells left after the Chinook and the rest.

I hear you! I’ve got a half written editorial on me spreading too many braincells across too many modules and not really being able to fly any of them.

The Kiowa is partly me wanting to do a review of it now that its had a chance to settle into its release status and partly because I want to fly with a buddy in his Apache which, for the life of me, I haven’t been able to crack as a module that I can fight well enough to be of use.

  2. The Kiowa is a blast to fly in DCS. Looking forward to reading more write-ups!

Really happy with it so far! I’ve been watching some of Casmo’s tutorials on how to operate some of the systems and I’m looking forward to tackling some more advanced features next.

Nothing better than training from an IRL aviator who flew them in combat for over a decade!

IIRC, he was also an Instructor Pilot, and that clearly comes through in several of his helo vids.

I also love the fact that he never sweats the “DCS-isms”. He’s obviously used to IRL throwing curve balls, and he just “Adapts, Improvises, and Overcomes”. 🙂

Right?! Yeah he’s very pragmatic and doesn’t sweat that stuff at all. I like the approach and it’s been a useful training experience for me!

  3. As a real life Kiowa Crew chief the aircraft is actually really simple the MMS is less complicated then a lightning 2 pod and just as effective… I have commented about the fidelity of the Cameras but hey guess they don’t want to believe they were better in 2004 in Iraq than simulated in game (not even close) the only part i don’t know much about. but i can keep all needed controls on a simple hotas… just note the aircraft will take off at 76 % torque and is a good metrics to use to land smoothly every time.. also setting torque to 96% allows for best speed cruise while allowing for quick response to threats with a good cushion to prevent over-torque at least that’s what my pilots always said. if you put a sloid 10 hours in you will be able to use it easily and effectively then another 3 hours on l2mums.

      Great info! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah the tutorials I’ve watched with the MMS seem to be really straight forward. I managed to get through the Gazelle’s system without much trouble and this, though more complex in the background, may be easier to manage overall.

Looking forward to digging into it!

      1. SHAM I FORGOT AND ITS IMPORTANT.. careful what you double bind.. you need to make sure your weapon release on the pilots side is not double bound to anything on the CP side. this is necessary for single player flight as it allows for you to fire from the CPG seat as the AC commander is the only one with a weapons release. Also binding the AI pilot is extremely important for single player as it allows you to simulate pilot control while operating the helicopter from CPG. at least that’s the best way to fly it while not putting in hundreds of hours into the module building exacting mussel memory… oh and ill fly with ya anytime. because i love my ole airframe

First time I lifted off everything went great. Once around the patch, landing was also great.

Second takeoff, same mission – Dynamic Rollover crash!! 😦

Definitely a “Me” problem tho. Once I got used to it, it’s very well behaved.

Side note: Casmo says PolyChop “really nailed it” in re the flight/physics model. I wouldn’t know from personal experience, but it is definitely one of my favorites to fly – especially with the doors off!

Using the .50 cal and FFARs are devilishly hard – makes ground attack with a P-47 seem downright easy!

I’m still doggedly working my way through the Apache – now that the FCR is more or less complete, you can kinda treat it like a Fox 3 fight in an F/A-18, and pretty much ignore George AI 😉

But honestly, the KW is such an overall great experience the only thing that keeps me flying the Apache more often than the Kiowa is the night/thermal PNVS coupled with the IHADSS. It seems like a genuinely unique experience in all of flight sim 🙂

  5. Great write up! you’ve inspired me to dust off my copy and learn it again! I enjoyed its simplicity and simple gunsight setup! but it also flew superbly. I also love the AH-64 but don’t have the time to fly it regularly, and every time I do I wish I had a copy of “DCS AH-64 Apache for Dummies” on the desk beside me! Too many modules.

You know, a good article or poll would be: what flight sim planes do you keep going back to (military or civilian)!

I hear that! I’ve bounced off the complexity of the AH-64 a few times. Lovely to fly but I was looking for something a bit simpler and the Kiowa seems like the right mix for me.

Also that’s a good article concept. I’ve tried to write one a few times but haven’t quite got it right yet.

      1. my guess is your article would promote more comments than anything else. And then you could write up the results with epic screenshots, lol!

(For me, I keep going back to the DCS Heatblur Tomcat and Phantom, both Fenix and Toliss Airbuses (but mostly Fenix), Felis’ labor of love the 747-200! PMDGs 737, and the slew of PC-12s over the years, and finally DCS Huey 🙂 )

Maybe! It’s something I’ll keep thinking about anyways. Lots of content for me to deal with in the interim! I’ve got some fun stuff in the works.

  6. This was a day 1 purchase for me, but unfortunately the moment either MMS turns on, it halves my FPS and becomes stuttery and unflyable – have had to drop it for the time being. Support told me my GTX 1070 was too old, so caveat emptor if anyone is considering buying with an older system.

    1. hey if you just want to enjoy flying it around make your own mission quick you can remove the MMS for more speed and still carry rockets and gun / stingers if you want will let you learn to fly then all you need is MMS if you upgrade your system.

      1. True, but I’ve got F-14 to master while I wait for Afghanistan to be finished, and then I can justify new system 🙂
