Be prepared for a bit of a shock when you consider how much memory the new DCS: Cold War Germany map is going to require on your storage drive of choice. That and additional details have been revealed in a detailed FAQ released by scenery maker Ugra Media. Let’s have a look!

Updated on April 16 at 7:40 pm EDT

Disk space, memory and VRAM considered

Posted just a few hours ago, Ugra Media have confirmed a number of key pieces of the DCS: Cold War Germany release. The map will require 205GB of storage to install and they recommend 32GB of system RAM and 8GB of VRAM. Hefty requirements to say the least!

Also confirmed is the price with the map launching at $55.99 USD for early access and rising to $69.99 USD at launch after all three phases of development are done.

The phases have been previously confirmed with the map extending outward around a core area to include more of Poland, Netherlands, France and Czechoslovakia during phase two and three. Autumn and spring seasonal variations will come in phase two and then phase three will include winter.

Other details revealed include 40 SAM site locations placed on the map, RSBN beacons placed at East German airbases, 59 airfields, an additional 27 smaller airfields for small aircraft, 4 helicopter bases, and an additional 10 airfields planned in phase 2 and 51 airfields for phase 3.

They’ve also released this “Best on Map” video to get a solid look at the whole map.

Updated: Clarified space requirements

Many of you have been writing in the comments about the space requirements with a mix of feelings from expected to hoping for something a bit more manageable. Ugra Media are clarifying that the total space requirements is for the Phase 3 release of the map. Phase 1 will be 110GB in size. Still extremely large.

We updated the information in the first post:
Phase 1 – 110 Gb, total size, including Phase 3 – 205Gb

MAESTR0 on the DCS World forums

Many of us, myself included, worried that the 205GB was just to start and that we’d see the map size grow as seasons and added details were added to that number. It’s still huge but it does give us some time to sort out storage requirements at least.

  1. Must be getting very very close now to release time. Memory requirements are high but well within what most flying DCS would have – the storage is the challenging part and I must admit I’ve taken to moving most of my terrains to another drive to give me the breathing room

  2. Lots of detail and variety requires lots of storage.

  3. As much as I would absolutely love this map, I’ve put enough money in Putain’s coffers already. I hate to go political, but Sumy has infuriated me.

It’s really a mystery where the money goes. I also hope my money does not go to Russia, but I would not bet on it.

  5. 205GB is a chunk for sure, but the map looks astounding. And I’m fortunate to have the RAM and VRAM specs covered with room to spare. So I’m looking forward to some excellent flights. I do as much tourist flying as combat flying in DCS, and this map looks great for both.

    1. Same here. Those storage, RAM & VRAM related requirements don’t shock me at all.🥱

      I’m ready for this map!

    2. I also do a bunch of tourist flying. I’m hopping they have all the major sites to look at. Syria is a great map but lacks many sites I think it should have, world heritage sites. I know it’s a war fighting game but sometimes, you just want to fly around and look at cool shit.

It’s going to be a mix for these maps. Balancing points of interest with development time.

It does look like there’s quite a few here. You probably won’t be disappointed.

  6. Anything Ugra makes is money well spent. All my specs are met and plenty of storage space at the ready. Bring it on!

  7. As much as I want this map, I just can’t stomach the storage required. A quarter of a terabyte for one map is a little much.

It is quite a bit! We’ve learned that the 205GB is for all three phases of the map fortunately… 110GB to start. Still a lot but maybe not quite as much.

  8. WOW – that’s a LOT of storage space!!!

Nearly DOUBLE what most other maps consume!!

Right now, DCSW takes 1.1 TB of space, with a bit over 800GB going just to Maps. Interestingly, one of the most popular payware maps, Syria, is 2/3rds smaller…!

Just this one map will raise DCS disk utilization by 20%, and nearly 30% for terrains.

But I’ll tell you what, I still think this one will become one of the most popular paid maps (for anyone who has the disk space!), and relatively soon, at that.

And I believe so because (IMHO) it’s possibly the quintessential modern air combat map territory, geography where most of the available aircraft would’ve faced off in a Peer to Peer general war.

By itself, the map looks VERY good, and if nothing else will provide a BOON for every single helicopter pilot who flies there!

And I just love that there is still room for aircraft carrier operations, though they most likely would’ve been called to different places in a general European war.

In any case, hats off to Ugra for being able to pull this off, and to ED for advancing the base simulator enough to be able to handle all this additional detail 🙂

Yes, absolutely agree! I think it will quickly become very popular. I’m willing to uninstall a few other maps if it means getting this one installed and running… it looks incredible! Review will come along soon!

    2. Iraq is miles from being finished but is already at 110GB (which is what Germany will be for Phase 1). Kola is now about 150GB.

  9. I wonder if they have released this map too far ahead of it’s time. I mean, shouldn’t they have waited until 2035 when computer storage is greater? I’m not criticizing, I’m just genuinely curious.

    1. When’s the last time you priced storage? It’s cheaper and greater now than ever. I don’t see the issue with a 200GB map for anyone who has a PC that includes $1,000+ GPU’s. Drives are the least of our worries.

Relative to the other components in my PC, getting a new SSD isn’t so bad. Looking like $200 CDN right now for 2TB from Samsung. Probably going to retire one of my 250GB SSDs that I’ve had for years.

      2. I think there’s a bigger issue for those with 8GB GPU’s. Huge investment to upgrade the GPU just for this map. Not just the price, but also the stock on hand.

Yeah that’s true as well. I’ve got a 12GB GPU and it’s hardly enough with DCS these days as well unless you turn something down. I’ve got landscape set to low to keep frames high in dense scenarios.

  10. Hard to believe but even this comment section is heavily censored. I had more freedom where I came from even though a certain part of the world managed to convince me I did not. Sad, really, as I do not believe the comment was inflammatory in any way. Removing this site from being my homepage. Dosvidanya ShamrockOneFiveCensoriser.

  11. ah, well, that’s a bit of good news, as you say it gives time to prepare.

I don’t think the disk space is outrageous – all the other event maps are in the 100+ Gb range.

and what we tend to forget is that DCSW maps have historically had just a small portion of their total coverage area filled with detail.

looks like Ugra are filling a far higher percentage of the map with usable scenery , and there’s no way to avoid a commensurate increase in disk size.
