Hardware maker VIRPIL has been busy extending out their Cadet Aeromax series of hardware peripherals. All-in-one joysticks, mounts, HOTAS and omni-throttle configurations and also now available – grips. These are priced slightly lower than some of the other options so let’s have a look.

CDT-AERO Grip

The newest bit of news for VIRPIL Controls is that they’ve released the CDT-AERO grip. It’s the same grip offered as an all-in-one package with the CDT-AEROMAX Flightstick but this one is an independent grip that you can use with your WarBRD or MongoosT-50CM3 base.

The grip has one dual stage trigger, one flip trigger, three 4-way hat switches, a grip paddle, three push buttons, an analogue mini-stick, brake lever axis, 2-way mode slider, and two programmable RGB LEDs. The twist axis is lockable so if you have pedals you can work with it that way and if you don’t you can use the extra axis. That’s a lot of capability.

The company is selling the Grip at €109.95 right now as part of the pre-order. €119.95 will be the regular price. Keep in mind that you’ll need to either buy or previously own a base.

Even more options

Ten days ago, VIRPIL also opened up a pre-order for the rest of their Cadet Aeromax series. There’s the grips, the left and right CDT-AEROMAX Flightstick and the left and right CDT-AEROMAX-Z Flightstick in Omnithrottle configuration (for space simmers primarily).

From what we can gather, supplies are limited and VIRPIL tends to be backordered permanently with stock being replenished and orders fulfilled. But it does sound like pre-order now will mean arrival sometime between the next several weeks and early next year depending on which product it is and where you’re located in the world.

  1. Mmmmmm… nice toys. 🙂

  2. I understand and support the idea of preorders, as they help Virpil finance production and plan their manufacturing more efficiently. However, as a customer who has been waiting since my order was confirmed in May 2025, it’s hard not to feel forgotten when new preorders are being launched while previous ones are still unfulfilled.

  3. They should really deliver those previous ones before announcing more… I too preordered Aeromax on May, it should had arrived during July. But then all the problems arose and it was delayed to August, but I still haven’t received it, nor any communication after the initial delay notification.

It’s quite irritating to read “new product” advertisements from Virpil nowadays.

I’ve read a bit about what happened but I don’t know all of the details. I’ve been testing one for a hardware review and it is excellent … so hopefully worth the wait. Are you EU, US or elsewhere? I’m curious if there’s shipping issues or something else?

      1. I’m based in the EU.
I placed my preorder for the Cadet joystick and the VPC VMAX throttle, confirmed in May.
After contacting Virpil, they mentioned that the delays are due to supplier issues, and they now expect to complete production by the end of November.
Hopefully the wait will be worth it, but better transparency and communication would be greatly appreciated by those of us who have been waiting for several months.

  4. Cadet looks like a good higher end alternative to the Gladiator as a desktop stick, considering it’s using metal cams.

    1. Yeah that’s the crux of it. It’s pricier but not by a huge amount all things considered and it gets you into a stick with metal cams. Really impressed with it even if there are some challenges getting the stock out.

  5. Just to follow up on my previous comment and share a quick update about the Virpil Aeromax: I received my joystick this week, even though the throttle is still pending. Virpil actually called me directly to offer shipping the joystick right away, and they will cover the shipping costs for the throttle once it becomes available.
    A gesture I really appreciated.

To be honest, I didn’t know Virpil before this pre-order, and I’m very pleasantly surprised by the hardware. The build quality is genuinely impressive: the metal cams are a real plus and provide a very nice feel in flight. The overall finish is clean and the whole setup inspires confidence.

The wait was long, that’s true, but in the end I’m very satisfied. I think this joystick is going to be talked about for quite some time…
