New year and new updates incoming from Red Star Simulations and their DCS: MiG-17F project. We don’t learn a lot about the project from this new video but we do get to see it in action. Let’s check it out!

In action

Keeping alive a tradition of Red Star Simulations has kept for several years now producing and providing some kind of update on or around the new year, this year we’ve got the above trailer showing the MiG-17F in action. The aircraft is showing with working systems, gunsight, guns, rockets and bombs, there are a few different liveries, and it does look like things are coming together.

The team are doing a MiG-17F for DCS complete with its twin NR-23 and one N-37 cannon, SPO-2 Sirena 2 RWR, the world’s first afterburning jet engine (Klimov VK-1F), and the Egyptian configured modification that includes 76mm ‘Sakr’ rockets as well as more typical fuselage racks for fuel tanks and bombs.

While it very much looks like a MiG-15, this MiG-17 is going to sport some different features.

The team are tight lipped this year saying only the following the video description:

Kicking off this new year with this video and setting the tone for what’s ahead. More details to come.

Looking forward to more details to come. From what we can see, it seems like this project is reaching finishing stages though we don’t know exactly what is left on the development line. Clearly, its flying and fighting in DCS World which is a great sign.

  1. Though it seems very similar to the Mig-15, which I really enjoy, I’m pretty sure I’ll grab this. I like the old Russian stuff. Would love to get the Mig-19, but alas…

Think of the MiG-15 as a far better designed MiG-9 and the MiG-17 as the ultimate expression of the concept. MiG-19 took them in new directions.

  2. the thing I really like about these guys is their intent focus on flight model.

this should be a great module for anyone who loves to fly!

and you never know, it’s not too far a step from the MiG-17 to a new MiG-19!

    1. A new Mig-19? I like the way you think. Would love to see Heatblur throw one together. 🙂

      1. I think making a new MiG-19 to replace RAZBAM’s one would make a lot of sense. But I believe such a remake of the RAZBAM full fidelity MiG-19 would need multiple variants included in one module to convince many to buy it this time round.

    2. A vietnam era MiG-19S (only cannon armament, no radar or missiles) that the North Vietnamese Airforce used, would be possible to make in a short amount of time and effort. Some of the instruments and systems are carryovers from the MiG-17F.

  3. Red Star has done a wonderful job on their MiG-17 Fresco. I am looking forwards to purchasing and flying this old MiG because there is just so many opts you can apply the -17 to because they were used in many places of the Cold War.

  4. I wonder that aircraft Red Star is going to do next. I would imagine it would have to be something that fits between the 1st-3rd generation fighter aircraft, because that is what they said they want to work on. I believe their next aircraft will be a Soviet fighter. Personally, I would like to see a MiG-25 interceptor or MiG-27 ground attack aircraft from them. But a MiG-19 also makes sense because RAZBAM has pulled out of DCS, a game that needs a MiG-19 replacement asap.

Right now all I want for third parties is to make their one product and support it successfully and then we’ll see if they make another.

      1. Hey, I just want to apologise for my suggestion spree. I have come to realize that this is not the best place, and though I am still more than happy to make comments on Stormbirds, I think Reddit would be better suited for my suggestions. Sorry about all this.

No apologies necessary. Were here to talk flight sims! That said, it’s good to have perspective. We want all of the airplanes, no difference there, but the wanting something and the realistic possibilities of seeing something should be kept on balance. Balance is key!

That engine is the first Russian Afterburner. The first afterburner on a production jet was the Jumo 004 on selected variants of the Me262. The US had a working afterburners in 1945 as well.

  6. Seeing the MiG-17 in what I think is the Royal Jordanian Air Force got me thinking that the game also needs a Sukhoi Su-7. The Su-7 Fitter were used by the Egyptian, Iraqi and Syrian air forces against the Israelis. Although many were destroyed by the IDF/AF fighters such as the F-4E in the Yom Kippur War of 1973, I think they would make a very important flyable asset to have in the Syrian and Sinai maps.

I know I should probably suggest this on Reddit or the DCS forums, but I always like to read what you have to say.

Su-7 has some merit. Widely used for quite a long period of time, long list of countries that had it in service, some flexibility of weaponry. Being the direct precursor to the Su-17/22, one would hope if it were done that there was a plan to make the most of whatever similarities there are.

      2. Would you be keen to buy a MiG-21MF? I think they were the second best version of the MiG-21 after the Bis. I had been doing some research and I discovered the Egyptians never had any MiG-21Bis’s but they did operate the MiG-21MF during the Cold War. I think it would help bring some more historical accuracy if they were to do a Yom Kippur War era dynamic campaign. If it is one thing you should know about me is that I love historical accuracy.

Historical accuracy is important, however, with DCS modules there’s massive investments to develop just one module. So, my question to you is what makes the MiG-21MF distinct that would be of interest to flight sim fans to the level that they would shell out cash for it?

      4. I would love a challenge flying a downgraded version of what we already have. But I do agree that not everyone else would feel the same way. Perhaps Magnitude might choose to incorporate several variants in their upcoming remake of the MiG-21Bis 2.0.
