Following its release last week, DCS: La-7 has picked up some positive comments from around the DCS World community. Like all early access releases, there is still work to be done and Octopus G has detailed some of that via a Facebook post. Let’s take a look and what the post launch plans are.

Asset pack, pilot model, and more

It’s always good to know that a new module has a strong future and it does look like developer Octopus G has some plans well underway. While they do plan to monitor feedback and respond with fixes to anything that isn’t working as intended, they also have some interesting items in development.

A new pilot model is being prepared which includes a first-person view option. If you prefer your cockpit to have a body in it, that should make for some good news.

Another item on the list is something of an asset pack. Several assets are planned though the specifics are not mentioned at this time. This may help, slightly in any case, the La-7 not being an aircraft that fits into the time and maps available for DCS WWII. On the other side of the coin, it does have solid rivals with the Fw190D-9 and Bf109K-4.

Other items being added include missing training missions, gameplay missions, missing sounds, and a radio system.

Stay tuned for more from Octopus G!

  1. I think DCS World needs more WWII aircraft in the sim. I know it is easier said than done, but I see potential for more aircraft being made in the near future. Personally, I would like to see an IL-2 Model 1944, IL-10, Yak-3 and a Yak-9U materialize one day, and a late war Eastern Front map to go with it of course to suit the era of these planes. I know the planes would have to be made by various third parties though if we want to see quicker progress. But I’m sure Yugra-Media could make the map though. They could base it off of the 1980s German map, though again easier said than done.

  2. I also think a map for Leningrad should be made for DCS World. I think it would sell well inside Russia as well as with Finland – plus it would give the I-16 a native map. And since the Siege of Leningrad went from 1941-early 1944, this could lead inciting the development of German, Soviet and Finnish planes from 1941 to 1944. Just a thought.

  3. The LA-7 is already a bit outdated even by then for Leningrad since it’s a late-1944 airplane by the time it managed to reach squadron service. It’s just a very late-war plane sadly. They’d have been better off making something more contemporary to the FW 190A, BF109 or Spit 9. You can always have early war planes used later, but you can’t do the same in reverse. A JU-88 or FW 190A in 1944 was definitely possible and quite common, but not an LA-7 in 1943.

We do have the Germany map which would work for the LA-7 “natively” since they would be seen in Germany near the end of the war in 1945. Sadly however, it wouldn’t see much action in it’s designed role because by then the Luftwaffe was very thin to non existent in the air. Developing a late war fighter for the allies is a bad idea for that reason, especially one like the LA-7 with very little ground attack options (unlike say the P-47 or P-51)

They’d have been better off doing an Il-2 variant or an LA-5 variant. Arguably there’s not even THAT much difference between the two planes (more like a modification than a whole new plane) It’s essentially a modified LA-5FN and you can use the LA-7 in that way as a “stand in” if you wanted, but why not just start with the LA-5FN to keep the purists happy?

I’m guessing access to documents and a plane to work on determined which project to do, but maybe sometime they’ll be able to pursue an Il-2. That would be a lot more useful for players.

    1. It will definately be interesting to see what they announce within the next year or two after the release of this magnificant airplane for DCS World. I think however it is likely going to be the Su-17/22 Fitter next though. I think that will nicely complement the 1980s Germany map as a ground attack and fighter bomber aircraft (I think at least).

  4. While I understand the desire for temporally cohesive plane, map and asset sets, I’m just honestly happy that we have a study level WW2 Soviet/Russian aircraft. Especially one that can go toe to toe with the other high end western fighters (while the I-16 fought in WW2, it was actually a pre-/inter-war design).

Not that it’s unique, but it is different and helps illustrate the contrasting engineering philosophies of the various major countries, etc.

Due to the niche interest of WW2 in DCSW, it seems unlikely that we’ll get a true “Russian Front” map. But a practical alternative could be a WW2 “re-skin” of the Kola Map. Since it’s so much less developed than the primary European countries, seems like that would be a lot less work than re-doing Cold War Germany. I’m not holding my breath for either 😉

Anyhow, KUDOS to Octopus G for what appears to be an excellent rendition – I’ll be picking it up for sure. 🙂

    1. It’s like there’s a lack of WWII content because there is a lack on interest because there is a lack of WWII content.

There is a cycle to it, that’s true enough. WWII is difficult for DCS because of its sandbox approach. They’ve tried to theme things but haven’t quite landed it correctly. It works better with time periods outside of WWII.

I wasn’t reeally bothered about this plane during the ‘buildup’ as I thought it would (typically) end up another 18 years down the track or something.
I’ve gotta say, it really IS a proper douzie!! The La5 was always a favourite of mine in IL-2 and this one just takes that like to a different level. It’s BRILLIANT (so far)!!

Great to hear that! The Lavochkin fighters are awfully interesting all things considered. I haven’t purchased the module yet but it is tempting.
