Time to round-up some DCS World news that has emerged over the last couple of days. We have the usual DCS World Weekend update which brings in some great news about Grinnelli Designs and their DCS: F-100 project. There’s an update about the Outpost 2 campaign for DCS: A-10C, Magnitude 3 gives us a new F-8 tidbit, and a preview of Reflected Simulations “Fight or Die” campaign is here too. Let’s go!

F-100 nearing release

I noted last week that Grinnelli Designs’ F-100 progress tracker had notched quite a bit closer to completion recently and indeed it looks like progress is very good. Eagle Dynamics DCS World Weekend news has a new status report that says that the project is “nearing release.”

Art development is nearly done, core systems are in place, and flight model fine tuning is currently underway. Audio development is also reportedly also being sorted out right now as well.

According to the update, the project has been passed to Eagle Dynamics for testing:

The module is in Eagle Dynamics internal testing, and the focus is on identifying and resolving any remaining issues to ensure a stable, high-quality release for you.

That’s certainly good news and indicative of the state of the project. That all said, past experience suggests that this may indicate a release that is either weeks or months away still. Nonetheless, I expect some excitement to build for this Cold War jet which will undoubtedly become part of the fabric of jets fighting it out on various DCS servers. It and the DCS: MiG-17F seem to be picking up speed towards release which means we should have some very fun new options arriving sooner than later!

Outpost campaign for A-10C

Another DCS World Weekend update is news that Stone Sky’s Outpost Part II campaign will be in the next DCS update. The DCS: Syria based campaign will put you in the seat of the DCS: A-10C II with a new narrative based campaign featuring 1,500 lines of voice-acted radio comms.

More on that here.

Magnitude 3 show off F-8 pilot

Magnitude 3 haven’t said very much about their DCS: F-8 Crusader, announced quite a few years ago now, however, we have seen a small development. A new Facebook page image shows off the pilot model for what enthusiasts have picked up on as being intended for the F-8 Crusader.

Though the project isn’t expected soon, it is nice to see that it still has life.

Magnitude 3’s Facebook page is here.

Fight or Die campaign preview

Reflected Simulations “Fight or Die” campaign for DCS: Spitfire IX has a preview that has just come out from YouTuber TOMCAT-NBR. The above video starts off with a cinematic and then transition into some gameplay from the upcoming campaign.

  1. F-100, been looking forward to this module for a while and good to see we’re getting closer (but as you said, it could be weeks or months, my bet is its a couple of months away). Some comments being made that there is no mention of early access with this module…

And there’s also the MiG-17 inbound soon, wonder if they will do a close release with these two aircraft despite that not being the SOP. I do hope they don’t though as I’m interested in both of them!

F-8 Pilot – another a/c I really want but yeah…. its years away

  2. It seems that the F-8J Crusader is the next plane that Magnitude 3LLC is going to make for DCS World. They have teased it for years, but if it is announced this year, we probably won’t get it until 2031-32 because of the 5-6 year rule for development time. I think module development is getting longer by a year every two years for combat aircraft.

Still though, I think the wait will be worth it. Good luck Magnitude 3LLC!

    1. M3 can’t even handle the F4U Corsair…

How in the world do they expect to handle the crazy Aeros of the F-8…?

      Let’s see a Mig-21 v2 first, please.

We can always hope for ongoing evolution 🙂 I do want to see a full status report from the team on what they are plotting with all of their projects.

      2. “Can’t handle the F4U Corsair?”

It’s released and a lot of people are enjoying it.

Every module has a couple issues but saying they “can’t handle it” is some massive exaggeration.

  3. I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of the F-100 or other Century Series, but I do understand the appeal.

This looks to be a great module, tho, so I’m willing to dive in if it reviews well. 🤙

I’m really curious to fly it. A lot of these Cold War types I find easier to pickup and have fun with (point and shoot) and I’m guessing the F-100 will be a bit like that. Challenging to fly but the systems should be approachable.

    2. Even Grinelli himself said in an interview that the F-100 wasn’t his first choice of aircraft to model! I would have much preferred an F-105 to fit in better with the F-4 and MiG-21 already in DCS. Still, based on JNelson’s involvement and the information already released, I’m hopeful this will be a great module. I hope it is and it finds a big enough market to power a follow-up project.

Fingers crossed! I’m quite excited about the experience of flying this one so I’m hopeful.

  4. In re JImbo:

    By “can’t handle it”, im

referring to the glacial pace of progress it took them to get a relatively simple warbird out the door. And tho improving, it had some serious flaws when it released – why after all that time…?

How long is it going to take them to produce a supersonic fighter with a freakish TILT WING, sidewinders, ECM and fire control radar…?!?

From a business perspective, it’s far and away smarter to release the MiG-21 v2 (and charge for it!) than to veer off into untested waters with the Crusader.

    All IMHO, of course 🤙

  5. It looks like the F-100D is going to be released sooner rather than later. What do you think Grinnelli Designs will do next after the Super Sabre? Surely we won’t know until after a year has passed, no?

I hope we don’t see them rush to a second module right away. Iterative work to iron out any inevitable issues should be the priority for quite some time.

After that? Curious of course to see. They may stay with the Century Series of fighters. Maybe an F-105?

      1. Oh exactly, that is why I said within a year of the release of Grinnelli’s Super Sabre – it gives the team enough time to refine their project rather than rushing into the next one.

Hopefully we see the F-105 Thunderchief as their next module.

        Interesting times for DCS indeed!

It’s a possibility at least. For the moment, I’m excited for the F-100’s imminent release. It seems like the MiG-17 may not be too far off as well.

  6. Do you think that Magnitude 3LLC should focus more on the MiG-21 2.0 before they go on to their F-8J Crusader module? I think it would make a lot of sense to because they would be covering familiar ground.

I actually think that they should make additional variants for their MiG-21 2.0 because the Bis never saw service in the Vietnam War as they entered service with the Vietnamese Air Force only from in 1978. I think we need a MiG-21MF Fishbed-J version to be historically accurate for a potential Vietnam War multiplayer server.

Wearing my project manager hat, I tend to try and avoid doing too much armchair PMing because I don’t know what the internal constraints are.

Purely from personal preference, I do think I’d like to see the MiG-21 2.0 get some love before a new module comes out. I’d be ok with a nominal upgrade fee if it was as significant as I’m thinking. The MiG-21 is so essential to the Cold War planeset online that I think it needs a bit of priority.
