1C Game Studios latest developer diary focuses on seasonal variations for the IL-2 Series Korea map. The developer reports that there are five seasonal variations that the map will showcase giving some unique visuals in each combination. Let’s have a look!

The seasons, they are a-changin!

For Dev Blog 67, 1CGS go into some details on how seasonal variation will work in Korea. The overall effect is quite similar to how its handled in Great Battles but with some interesting artistic focused changes.

The diary reports on the challenges that they faced on each type of seasonal variation. Autumn for example is difficult to pull off with colourful variations in trees and vegetation that can easily look like a repeating pattern if done incorrectly. They say they’ve found a solution to that so we’ll have to see it in action.

Winter has more variety too where they say that some areas will be entirely snow covered while others will have a lighter dusting of snow. More realistic particularly of Korea and the photographs that are available from during the war.

A video has been released showing off the variations.

So we have summer, autumn, winter, spring and… blooming spring. The fifth variation shows off Korea as spring begins to take hold. They say they will show off more of that soon.

  1. As much as I am tired of the old IL2, I am willing to look at this one with an open mind. And it does look good at times. But not purchasing until I see some serious reviews.

I’m kind of hoping at this stage that Great Battles has a good bit of life left in it. Especially now that we’ve finally got some bigger bombers incoming! So that will be good entertainment still to come.

A serious review I intend to offer! Though it will no doubt take some time to put together.

      1. Do we think that Great Battles might somehow get opened up for modders to do more, so that it grows from community development?

I don’t think it will for the reason that 1CGS are clearly iterating on their technology and I don’t think they would want to open up things that they are still, in a sense, using.

They do seem to want to partner with people on content. It’s why we’ve got types like the I-153 and IAR80 already in the sim. We could see more of that.
