We’ve got a few recent updates from Red Star Simulations coming in. The first is an overview of what the team is currently working on right now while a second and third are a showcase of the radio systems and NDB approach system for the MiG-17F using their recently developed ARK-5 ADF.

The latest work on the Red Star Simulations DCS: MiG-17 appears to be all across the systems of the aircraft. They say that they’ve been busy implementing core systems, overhauling engine simulation with realistic flamout, surges, engine damage, and restart logic, while adding radio navigation functionality (more on that in a bit).

They’ve also been hard at work verifying the flight model:

One of the highlights has been validating our flight model against a real MiG-17. We’d like to thank our friend Mike Terfehr (@mterfehr) of FighterJets Inc., who used time during his flights to record data and videos for us. This allowed us to compare our simulated aircraft directly with a real MiG-17 at altitudes up to 27,000 feet. The results have been incredibly encouraging and our performance numbers matched the real aircraft not just closely, but two were virtually the same. We’re hoping to share side-by-side comparison videos soon.

They are currently cleaning up and optimizing code, working on the damage model, and gun radar.

Apparently they plan to submit the aircraft to Eagle Dynamics in the “very near future.” That certainly sounds like we’re starting to approach that point where you can start to get excited about this one. Still, the verification process can be lengthy so don’t start holding your breath right this moment.

Meanwhile, we have two new videos from the team showing off radio communication and navigation in general for the first video.

This one above is followed by another video showing off a low visibility IMC NDB approach. This shows off the ARK-5 Automatic Direction Finder (ADF)

  1. Getting slowly excited for this, just finished the Museum Relic campaign in the Mig 15 and absolutely adored it, this is tempting me aside from the fact I’ve bought the 29 and the Super Sabre this year

  2. This year I bought F-100 and F-14BU, but that MiG-17 module is an absolute day-one buy for me.

  3. Not sure if I want this. Just bought the F-14B/U, which I was on the fence about but I couldn’t resist the Heatblur goodness. I’ll probably save my cash for the Balkans.

  4. I’ve been wanting this for 5 years! I remeber back in 2021 when RedStar first announced this project. Seems the finishline is visibly getting closer by the day.

  5. I know I have said this before, but hopefully the DCS ecosystem gets a MiG-19P or S (or even maybe both) from RedStar once they are finished with the MiG-17F, just in case there is a Vietnam War map on the way.

    I know it sounds like a risky business move, since a lot of people have the RAZBAM MiG-19P and people might not be ready to move on so soon to a replacement module. But I also think that the abandoned RAZBAM MiG-19 is on borrowed time and won’t be able to be supported when DCS switches to Vulkan.

    Another reason why I think RedStar doing a MiG-19 replacement is a wise idea is the MiG-17 is similar to the MiG-19 in terms of design philosophy and avionics. On paper it would cut down research and development time by a lot.

    One final reason – Vietnam. I believe it is only a matter of time before a 1960s map of Indochina is about to be announced, yet a large part of the gameplay will be missing – the MiG-19P/S. If they decide to take on such a risky investment, I think it could sell well.

    But first, I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Lets see how this one goes, and then we’ll see what they decide to do. Thank you.

      The hopeful news is that I’ve seen a couple statements saying that the RB modules may get some type of official work around that allows them to keep flying in DCS v3. 🙏

  6. Every time I see news on this module I get happier and happier.

    It’s not necessarily that I pine for old RedFor jets, but mostly that it seems to be so well executed and at a high fidelity level even by DCS standards.
