A serious bug has crept into the drag calculation system for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s Sim Update 7 release that affects some (or perhaps all) third party aircraft. If you’ve taken out an aircraft on a recent flight and been having trouble slowing down for landing…. its not just you.

Problem reported, a fix on the way

Raul, the lead developer behind FSReborn, reported a bug on October 12 indicating that drag profiles for aircraft had been thrown significant out in the Sim Update 7 release than from previous releases. The test example was his Phenom 300E business jet:

Phenom max speed at FL450 is match .78, with SU7 is going .793 and in occasions well into the RED tape.

Alex from SimWorks Studios followed up confirming the problem with their products as well.

I can confirm that our testers see vastly different numbers in SU7 vs SU6 with the FS24 PC-12. Cruise speeds are 5-20kts faster, with error increasing with altitude. Power off gliding was also much better than it should be.

Users have reported issues across other products as well so the problem appears to be widespread with some users saying its all of their aircraft that are affected.

For their part, Microsoft and Asobo have been fast in responding with Eric from Asobo registering the bug after a few questions back and forth on the forums.

Hi everyone,

We have identified an issue in the drag calculation and a fix candidate is being tested.

I dont’t have an ETA for this fix right now.

Best regards,

Eric / Asobo

Let’s hope that issue is resolved quickly. You can see the commentary on this forum thread.

Other issues have also cropped up with Sim Update 7 with products like Flight FX’s Hawker 800XP and its Working Title based PL21 having seen its NAV/FMS1 guidance broken when entering arrival information. Flight FX have reported that Asobo is aware of the issue.

Hopefully, we’ll see these avionics glitches and drag performance problems sorted out in a hotfix!

  1. A welcome bug given today’s fuel prices!

    1. Hah! If only it was that easy in real life 😉

  2. From I read on the thread Eric says it also affects 1st party aircraft. And besides having too high cruising speed, the problem is much worse at idle.
Some helicopters are also completely broken as they will stay hovering in ground effect at 0% collective.

I hadn’t heard about helicopters. Yikes, that’s a bad one.

Originally it sounded like third party types were affected and first party integrated was ok. Clearly not. More yikes!

      1. I flew the Dauphin and OH-6 last night looking for problems.

No issues with controlling them and had two good flights. 🤙

      2. I also couldn’t feel much of a difference with taog’s hangar aircraft. But the H125 especially is completely broken, and so is it with the PXP pack

    2. Interesting to hear the H125 is truly broken! 😞

But I only fly the Taog’s Dauphin and Cayuse, and they seem to be entirely usable. 🤙

  3. After reading comments ranging from “the sky is falling!” to “This is a Reddit nothing burger”, I decided to test it out for myself.

Cranked up the FSR Phenom, went for a short 200nm IFR flight at 20k and had exactly zero issues with any aspect.

Aircraft remained entirely controllable and pleasant to fly. I even pushed the descent phase to a very high fpm, and again, no issues with control or managing speed.

I was concerned about potential problems with an over speed landing, but nope – no issues there either.

I’m not saying there’s no issue. I’m saying the issue isn’t serious enough to materially affect the game. 🤙

I suspect its more of an issue when flying longer haul where the fuel and descent calculations really start to diverge from the typical. It also sounds like a hotfix is imminent (or maybe already in place) so hopefully that’s the case. I’m going to recheck into it shortly.

      1. Yep – that’s likely a thing. 👍

Main point being we can all still fly – just have to watch the gas gauge!

Asobo did say the fix is already in the internal “Flighting” code and being validated with affected aircraft. Should go out to Dev Beta this weekend some time, and then maybe Public Beta next week or so, and then out to Production.

Could be as soon as a week, I reckon. 🤙
