I finally broke down and bought the Viggen module during one of the sales late last year and I’ve been having a good time with it so far. I did feel like there hadn’t been much in the way of updates on what is coming with the Viggen but today that changed.

New features, new campaigns

Vigg_Akktu_01

A whole bunch of new features and bug fixes are coming to the Viggen. One of the new features is a auto-generated data cartridge with pre-programmed waypoints.

The BK90 cluster bomb dispenser is also apparently being worked on with the help of Eagle Dynamics to make sure that it works properly in both single and multiplayer.

We’ve previously learned that two campaigns were in the works and it sounds like they may be closer than we had initially hoped. Cobra847 from Heatblur updated us on their future plans:

As mentioned in our update, 2018 will together with the Tomcat be the “year of content” for the Viggen, which includes additions such as the J-35 Draken, two free Caucasus based campaigns, many new liveries, a complete exterior sound overhaul and more. The ultimate goal in the medium term is to mature the Viggen, consider it feature complete and major bug free and “release” it out of Beta status.

Speaking of new liveries, we have some screenshots of a new JA-37 “Akktu Stakki” scheme thanks to this update.

It looks pretty good, especially against the snow covered terrain of the new Caucasus map.

I’m expecting to see these updates and more as detailed on Cobra847’s forum post in a future DCS update sometime during or after the DCS World 2.5 update. The new campaigns will almost certainly be ready for use with the new map which is all the more exciting.

They were talking at length about the F-14 about three weeks ago. Worth a read on that too. The F-14 is delayed (originally a 2017 release) but it sounds like they are getting some key pieces together and we’ll definitely be seeing it this year. I would guess maybe even sometime in Q2 (though don’t quote me on that). https://stormbirds.blog/2017/12/19/heatblur-delays-f-14-new-ajs-37-news/

  2. When you bought the Viggen module, what came with it by way of software?

You mean what was included in the module? The Viggen itself, manual, training missions (a half dozen as I recall) and a series of single player missions on the Caucasus map. I’d say about a dozen missions?
