With patch 3.006 released on Wednesday, I wasn’t sure if we’d see an update this week from 1CGS but they have been plenty busy and they have a lot to show off to us. This week we’ve got new info on Bodenplatte’s new US pilot model, Flying Circus’ Sopwith Camel, and Tank Crew’s new high detail buildings.
Get ready for the Camel
Up there in the ranks of most iconic aircraft of all time, the Sopwith Camel is certainly one of the legends of aviation and I’m overjoyed to see it arriving in Flying Circus Vol 1. It’s widely expected that it, and the Pfalz D.IIIa, will be available in a patch coming in the next month to two months.
The work on the updated 3D model for Camel will be finished soon and here are its first pics in the game engine. Since it was one of the iconic aircraft of the first air war, this is important for us.
With revised geometry and new 4K skin textures, the Camel is looking great. Have a look!
New high detail buildings
Tank Crew’s Belgorod centered map will feature select villages that will have new higher detail buildings than is typical for IL-2 towns and cities. Although most buildings in IL-2 look decent at ground level, they aren’t quite up to the level required for a tank sim and so the developers have struck a compromise.

In towns and villages near the frontlines where most of Tank Crew’s action will take place, these buildings will appear and will come with partially destroyable features. They likely won’t be as good as DICE’s Battlefield 1 or Battlefield V but they will no doubt feature into the more urban types of combat the may be seen for parts of the Kursk battle.
New US pilot model
Completing the trifecta of news and information for the IL-2: Great Battles Series, we have news on IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte as well. The new US pilot model is underway and looking better than any other pilot model we’ve seen before.
This new model, just like the two pilot models made for Flying Circus, has been made at the new level of detail allowing for the even more realistic look – its textures and materials are four times more detailed than older models.
That’s pretty impressive news and it makes me hope that the developers will later consider going back and revising the German and Russian pilot models too. I have no doubt that 1CGS will do that eventually.
The second image is interesting of course because it also shows off the pilot’s oxygen mask. At present, there is no masks used and no animation to support it but it looks like Jason Williams and the 1CGS team have been able to devote some resources to adding that little feature – it’s all part of 1CGS working on the polish of the product and really making sure even the little details are looking good.
Some will say that this should have been in years ago but as we know, they are a small team and it takes time to get these details done right. And I know most of us want them done right.
I’m excited to see what else Bodenplatte, Flying Circus and Tank Crew have to offer.
