As recently as Sunday I was wondering when we’d find out more details regarding the release date of the DCS: MiG-19 by RAZBAM and Eagle Dynamics today made an announcement that the release had been postponed. Let’s talk about the statement, about the stated goals from RAZBAM, and what happens next.
A delayed release
Earlier today, NineLine, Eagle Dynamics Community Manager, posted a statement on the forums stating that the MiG-19 would be delayed. Here’s the statement:

After an extensive review of the MiG-19, we have decided to postpone its release until a few items are resolved. It’s RAZBAM’s desire to release the MiG-19 in a finished state so it will need just a little more time in the oven to meet this expectation.

The MiG-19 is already a wonderful product that both Razbam and us will be proud of. There just needs a litttle more work on the flight model, documentation, and UI art.

Ready from release
Unlike most DCS World releases, RAZBAM’s stated goal with their DCS: MiG-19 project was to release the jet in a finished state from release. This means all systems, weapons, functions, and features are ready to go from the get-go.
I think most of us would have allowed a little wiggle room when it came to things like the advanced training modules (already well under way by BalticDragon), however, the goal has been to launch mostly finished and that is apparently what’s happening here.
I suspect that RAZBAM and Eagle Dynamics have been evaluating the state of their newest module for a few weeks now and that they went to a release candidate (typical SOP for software development), found more issues than they were comfortable with, and made a collective decision to wait on the launch.
So what happens now?
Though January release is not going to happen for the MiG-19, this doesn’t mean that we’re likely to see a huge delay. At least that’s my sense both from what we’ve seen of the module and based on the statement of Eagle Dynamics today. “Just a little more time in the oven” doesn’t sound like a major rebuke of quality or content. This suggests more to me that there are some nagging details that the team still needs to solve and that releasing with a quality release is important here for both Eagle Dynamics and for RAZBAM.
Far from being an indicator of a bad situation, I choose to look on this as being a positive thing. It likely will mean that the module will release in a more polished state than it may have and it also means that things that were planned like the rest of the training videos, included missions, and the overhaul of the cockpit textures are probably going to ship on day one.
No doubt more information will come soon and we’ll learn what the new launch window is for this aircraft module.
