DCS: JF-17 might be coming in October?

The rumour mills are working at high speed right now and here’s a new rumour coming out that the DCS: JF-17 module, a high fidelity 4th gen fighter jet from Deka Ironworks, might be coming in October. This is what we know right now!

Rumour sources

In a series of posts on the DCS World forums under the Deka Ironworks section, a forum poster by the name ‘kaoqumbaIn’ posted the following statement:

JF17 will be released before October 1 if there are no major problems in the development process.

Forum posters asked for clarification and it came with two responses:

Flight simulation game enthusiasts in China have set up a communication group about JF17 on the qq communication software (similar to Facebook) and have developers in it. They have disclosed that if there are no problems with the development, it will be released before 10.1. And it will have higher playability and completeness than F16C and F18C. As the best gift for Chinese players on National Day holiday

I said October 1st is China’s National Day. Assuming that DIS does not encounter problems that require additional time to solve, JF17 will be released within 26 days at the latest. It’s normal to have no news, and DIS has few news because they prefer to concentrate on development. I am honored to join the QQ communication group formed by the development team long ago, and they will occasionally disclose JF17 news when chatting.

Another post from another forum user, this time with a 3rd party developer status, posted a response from follow up questions on lack of marketing and pre-launch hype with the following:

The reason is our chief cockpit artist was in hospital for more than 1 month.
Good news is, he is back now, again.

Finally, another follow up post seems to indicate further information has been released by Chinese sources talking about how complete the module will be at launch.

Hi! According to the latest information disclosed, once JF17 is released, it will have almost all the functions. However, there are some problems in the EXP and DBS sub-modes of air-to-ground radar, and the test results are not satisfactory. Maybe later in the EA phase. At present, the MAP/GMTI/SEA1/SEA2 sub-mode of air-to-ground radar has been realized.

Awaiting confirmation

As with other rumours that I’ve posted recently, these have at least a shred of credibility behind them otherwise I wouldn’t post them. Nonetheless, I remain skeptical of all rumours until we’ve had them confirmed via official statement.

Despite the lack of any confirmation at this point, it may be soon in coming especially if these are believed to be true. Furthermore, Deka Ironworks themselves have been hinting that their project was going well, that it was on track and that it would release in “Summer of 2019” which technically doesn’t end until September 23 though that definition may be a bit looser than that.

In July they posted an image showing off that they were “Polishing Features” and “Shooting Bugs” overlayed on one of the JF-17’s MFD’s.

Deka Ironworks also tends to be a developer that posts little, at least in English, but they can suddenly deliver new content without much initial fanfare. Consider the J-11A that came out with only a short warning.

Three weeks away?

If the rumours are true, we’re just three weeks away from either when the module releases or when Deka Ironworks sends their module to Eagle Dynamics to get a check over before releasing it. At this point we don’t know.

I’ll be paying close attention and bringing the latest news to you when it breaks!

Presume it may launch with those stand-off weapons shown in the picture, which would be a good initial load compared to previous modules.

Possibly. Deka was showing off their “man-in-the-loop” guided missiles a year ago. It’s possible that a good number will be available at launch.

The module might turn out to be a work of love but I personally find this aircraft totally uninteresting and incredibly dull.

I wondered about it at first but a look into it’s history and it gets quite interesting. It’s lineage traces back to another DCS World aircraft… the MiG-21.

I think it’ll be most interesting to folks who fly REDFOR in multiplayer and haven’t had a flexible multi-role jet to operate with.

I’m very interested to see what Deka Ironworks can produce here. I expect I will be covering it when it launches.

It’s a day one buy for me even if only to hold myself over until the release of SLAM and such for the Hornet as well as the A-G radar, as well as until the Viper (which I already pre-ordered, early access mess aside, I’m ok with waiting for that stuff). I just wish they’d give info in regards to pricing.

Given the complexity of the jet and the long list of unique munitions, I’d expect pricing likely in the range of the Hornet, Falcon and Tomcat.

We’ll see what they finally go with.
