An eagle eyed reader of Stormbirds (thanks Flappie) spotted a response from Matt Wagner on the Eagle Dynamics DCS World Facebook page that mentioned that there are two WWII themed maps in development. What could they be?
In addition to Normandy
The Normandy map, by Ugra Media, is the classic WWII themed map for DCS World. It has, however, had its share of issues and many have called for it to be upgraded. That is happening.
… while I understand the concerns with the Normandy map, it is done by a separate 3rd party. They are working on an update to bring it up to the level of quality of the other maps.

But that’s not the real news here. The news is that there is not one but two WWII themed maps apparently in development. In a response to someone named Jimmy, Matt Wagner provided the following response.
Hi Jimmy, we (Eagle Dynamics) are currently working on two, new WWII maps. Thanks, Wags

That’s about confirmation enough to know that Eagle Dynamics is working on not one but two new WWII maps. But what are they and do we have any other information?
Speculation
There isn’t much to go on right now without a firm grasp of Eagle Dynamics plans for DCS: WWII. So far the series has focused on late 1944 and 1945 aircraft and only recently started adding more types that were suitable for the Normandy June/July 1945 scenario so it’s possible that Eagle Dynamics next map takes the series further into the war with a map that is more suitable to the 1944/1945 time period – something similar to IL-2’s Rhineland map perhaps?
It’s been suggested that the map in the background of the recent P-47 screenshot is not set on Normandy but some other western Europe map. Some have remarked how the buildings are still very much reminiscent of the French country side so that could be interesting.

There’s also much potential for other maps and the team may ultimately decide to go to the east as well and offer something there.
The Finnish Gulf, Stalingrad, and Moscow would offer WWII scenarios well suited to the east… though that scenario currently has just the I-16 as an aircraft suitable at the moment.

We also have a free map that we’ve speculated about before as well.
That map was intended to be suitable to both WWII and modern day and we’ve heard little since then so it’s still anyone’s guess. It might be a WWII themed map first and modern day second.
There is also a French group who put together a custom map called DCS Paris which features airports and airfields… near Paris. So far the developers of the map say its not quite up to typical DCS World standards but they might work towards a more full featured release in the future. I doubt this is on the list… still, it’s an interesting development in DCS World map development.
There’s not much else to go on right now except that Eagle Dynamics is expanding their collection of maps for their WWII themed titles and that’s probably a very welcome thing.
