The latest aircraft, airports, scenery coming to Flight Simulator

The news keeps coming with new airports, aircraft, and scenery all in development for the newest Flight Simulator from Microsoft. An ever growing number of teams are throwing their hat in the ring and announcing products or intentions to develop them for the new sim. Here are some of the highlights!

Orbx

We start off with Orbx who made the announcement and showed off some impressive in-development images of scenery that their team was working on. They announced that several products will be available at release and will retail for US$7.99 to US$19.99 on OrbxDirect and on the Microsoft Marketplace. Current owners of current owners of Orbx products running on FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and Aerofly FS 2 can get a 40% discount as well which is a nice bonus! Some of the additions include London City Airport, the London City Pack featuring various highly detailed landmarks, the classic Innsbruck Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport, Orcas Island Airport, Tacoma Narrows Airport, Hollywood Burbank Airport, and Santa Barbara Airport. It’s an impressive line-up for launch to say the least!

PMDG 737 NG3

Well respected aircraft maker PMDG, best known for their line of study level aircraft for FSX and P3D showed off their first images of the PMDG 737 NG3. The detailing is incredibly impressive and should pair well with the new sim. Their commitment to study level details will surely satisfy folks looking for a high end sim of an airliner – especially one as essential and classic as the 737. See more at the announcement on their forum.

Frecce Tricolori Virtuali

Virtual aerobatic team, Frecce Tricolori Virtuali, best known for their aerobatic displays in DCS World and their AERMACCHI MB-339 that they have been developing for that sim announced that they will be bringing that aircraft to Microsoft Flight Simulator as well.

Two versions have been proposed. A ‘lite’ version featuring default Microsoft systems and flight modeling and a ‘pro’ variant that would be come sometime later that would port over the more sophisticated dynamics and modeling of systems that they have done for DCS World into the Microsoft sim.

See the announcement on their Facebook page.

FlyT

Scenery makers FLYT announced that they were finishing up their work on Willard Airport for X-Plane 11 before switching over to working on Frasca Field for Microsoft Flight Simulator. In a follow-up question on their Facebook they also announced that their freeware Apucarana would also eventually make its way into the new sim.

See these screenshots and more on their Facebook page.

The Milviz collection

Well known third party aircraft maker Milviz has announced several aircraft for the new Flight Simulator. Their 737-200, a classic version of the famous 737 airliner, is one of several aircraft they have announced.

Followed then by a few tweets containing the F-4 Phantom, T-50 and B-55 all in the new engine.

Finally, one more work in progress is the DHC-2 Beaver. Hopefully we’ll see the multiple variants of this aircraft including the classic seaplane configuration.

Big Tire Productions

BigTire Productions announced that their KitFox aircraft, currently available for X-Plane 11, would be coming to MSFS as well and that owners of the X-Plane 11 variant would be able to download the new aircraft from the X-Plane.org store absolutely free. See the announcement here.

I’m interested to see a side by side comparisons of the ORBX stuff to the standard scenery. Will it be incremental improvements given the low price and already high quality of the standard scenery, or will it be a real step up?

And I want a heavy duty fast mover for this sim F-15 style. As much as I want a Piper Cub to fly over BC, I also want some afterburners and fuel tanks for some high speed distance runs.

    Should be fun.

Judging by what we’ve seen of the scenery, in cities where there’s good photogrammetry we’ll see pretty good default images. Where there isn’t and the AI is building the buildings they tend to look good but with some issues. Orbx will specialize for where you want that custom human built touch.

I’d wait and see what they look like and if they are good enough.

Some fast movers will no doubt come to the sim before too long!

…and for my big wishes; 2 engine vintage amphibious aircraft like the PBY Catalina or good old Grumman Goose from FSX… that would be great to know if any developer is on this…

I love the views in MSFS2020 due to bing maps which are very realist however since the airports are addons i cant see enough to make me buy it. Im flying MSFX with those addon airports. Am I missing something?

Hi Jon. You might be missing out. The new Flight Simulator has 37,000 airports. Most of them are generic but decent looking and most of them have marked taxiways and the like. The marketplace has plenty of upgraded versions of which a few of them are freeware and some, such as the ones from Orbx, are available on discount if you own them in other sims.
