Update #5 for Microsoft Flight Simulator gets rid of ‘press any key!’

It isn’t the only part of update #5 but I’m sure nearly everyone will be pleased to know that the ‘press any key’ start-up screen which delays loading and forces you to press a button in the middle of start (when you could be getting coffee, beer, chasing a puppy/kid/kitten/etc.) is gone! Oh and a couple dozen other issues have been solved. Let’s have a look!

Lots of fixes, waiting on a few more

From fixing control sensitivity and twitchiness on specific aircraft and sorting out some more avionics screens going blank to autopilot improvements on the Cessna Grand Caravan, Citation Longitude, TBM 930 and 747-8, Update #5 has quite a bit going on.

I’m most happy to hear that autopilot issues continue to be tackled and sorted out. They have made me abort flights in certain aircraft or outright cancel others midflight. Hopefully this update makes all the difference for the aircraft already fixed and that any remaining others are sorted out in short order.

Also listed as a fix in the patch notes… that enormous hole in the ground in Brazil has now been fixed.

Each update from Asobo Studios and Microsoft have helped to turn Flight Simulator into the product that it should be. With continual updates on the horizon, the trajectory from here remains upwards.

  • Improved sensitivity and twitchiness of control surfaces for the Daher TBM 930, Cessna 152, Cessna 152 Aerobat, Cessna 172 classic and Cessna 172 G1000
  • Improved autopilot behavior for pitch management, altitude capture and stability for Cessna 208 B Grand Caravan EX, Cessna Citation Longitude, Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and Daher TBM 930
  • Fixed Zlin Shock Ultra caution amber light which was always on
  • Fixed Cirrus SR22 windshield deicing not working
  • Fixed Cessna 152 flood light always ON during tutorials
  • Fixed aircraft avionics screens going blank in certain conditions
  • Fixed Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner APU fault light behavior
  • Unlocking longitudinal position of elevator to allow for “Canard” airplanes

UI

  • Press any key to start screen is now automatically skipped at launch
  • Option added to the Misc menu to switch between Metric and US standard units
  • Performances has been improved in plane selection menu and marketplace
  • The TrackIR can be enabled/disabled in the camera panel during flight
  • Cockpit tooltips can now be deactivated in the Accessibility options menu

WEATHER

  • Metar data refresh issue has been fixed

INSTALLATION MANAGER

  • Solved several installation issues that were affecting edge cases
  • We now display the download speed and amount of packages that are being downloaded

INPUT

  • Support for Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant Airbus Edition
  • Ability to move the origin of the sensitivity curve and change the sensitivity value on both side of the origin
  • Fix input values when using deadzones

ACTIVITY

  • All Landing challenge scores should now be properly tracked in the leaderboards

MARKETPLACE

  • Quality of life updates for the marketplace

WORLD

  • Motion blur has been added
  • New temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) has been implemented
  • The temporal upsampling has been fixed (when TAA is active with the render scale below 100%)
  • Night lighting has been improved
  • Water night reflections have been added
  • Huge hole in Brazil has been fixed

KNOWN ISSUES

  • VNAV can overshoot the climb speed. Disconnecting the AP after take off and re engaging it will limit the overshoot impact
  • The Cessna Citation Longitude can be slightly below the glide slope as you get close to the airport
  • Once activated, the Switch to Mach units knob won’t return to knots on the Airbus A320neo
  • Live weather fails to save properly after restarting the game
  • UI fails to refresh after you Buy & Download any item, letting the download button appear

    Flight sims do have the best bugs, from the leaping tomcats, the self-destructing Il-2’s,the suborbital engine bounce, to the P-47’s inverted turbine, now we have the enormous hole to the center of the earth.

      Haha that they do! In some cases these are very fun bugs like the Brazil hole or the giant skyscraper in a small Australian town.

    Did anyone notice any issues with the C172 and C152? At take off the plane will not pitch up, no matter how hard I pull on the yoke. I only seem to have this issues with the C172 and C152, but not with other prop planes.
    It all worked fine prior to upgrading this morning.

      I haven’t flown either since the last patch but I will check. Are the controls free and moving prior to takeoff run?

        While on the ground and in the air, moving the yoke as well as using the keys on the keyboard does move the elevator surfaces (check by external view). They are moving to both max up and max down position.
        It seems the plane is way way over it’s take off weight.

      Sometimes I find the controls trimmed to full negative at startup. Have you checked trim?

        Yep, checked trim as well. Even after re-installing MSFS 2020 I still have the same issue. Even with full nose up trim the C172 and C152 do not climb.

    Puh, they tried and failed.
    Can’t fly any more, Joystick not doing anything, plane does not respond to any order since last update.
    I paid for it, i was a fool.

    What a world is this, we are living in??????

    They can do anything and nobody will stop them from earning money with people like me, who just want to have fun.

    I won’t touch it anymore and step in my PC12, the real one, and I will enjoy the real thing. Sorry about the rest, you have been fooled by microsoft, as so many times before…

      Hi VoWa,

      I’m a sorry you’re having a lot of problems with Flight Simulatir. While nobody can deny that MSFS has had a rocky launch, it’s also not the case that everyone is having the same issue that you are. Overall the control setup for this sim has been pretty good.

      I’d recommend a troubleshooting forum or hopping into a Discord group and seeking some help if you’re interested in getting your system to work with the software.

      I’ve flown several dozen incredible flights in recent weeks. So the software works. But I feel for you and anyone else struggling to enjoy this or any other flight sim.

    To make it more realistic microsoft should immediately charge your credit card 8k to fix the autopilot when it is acting up. It would be be more like actually owning a plane that way😁

    It seems the pitch up problem with the C152 and C172 is a known issue. A temporary solution is to set the flight model to “Modern”. Go to Options, General, Flight model and when set to Legacy, change it to Modern.
    I have changed the setting to Modern and that has resolved the issue.

      Oh I see. That would explain why I haven’t had an issue.

      Is there any reason to use the legacy flight model? I understand it to be FSX’s model and we’ve moved well on since then.

        “Legacy” flight model is required for many FSX aircraft conversions to fly properly, and users are just leaving it set to “Legacy” all the time, causing problems with MSFS native aircraft.

        Ahh that makes sense. IMHO, I’d avoid that mode altogether but I guess in those specific circumstances that would make sense.
