Deadstick Flight Log #4 talks closed beta, scenery generation, weather

Indie developer REMEX Software are still busy working on their Deadstick bushplane flight simulator and their latest video, titled Flight Log #4, is all about the delay to the closed beta and what they are been busy building to ensure that their sim world is going to look and feel the way they want it to. They also talk quite a bit about the weather! Let’s have a look!

Scenery, weather a big focus

Deadstick is a unique flight simulator experience that is focused on bush plane flying in a fictional world that closely resembles the Pacific North West and maybe Alaska. The team has been building the sim over the last few years to incorporate persistent maintenance, pilot health, aircraft health, generated missions, and scenery to match the whole experience. When your pilot gets tired and needs a rest? You pitch a tent! When you need to get a new mission, you fly into an airport and visit the job board to find something new to do.

It’s taken a long time but Deadstick looks like it’s coming together and while Flight Log #4 announces that the closed beta has been delayed, the progress that they are showing is impressive. In this log they talk about how they are generating their world and just how much effort they have put into their tools to ensure that the world is expansive and believable. They also talk about the effort they are putting into their weather simulation – the developers believe that in this sim, the enemy is the weather. And that sounds pretty cool as a game design goal as well as a flight sim experience.

They’re right. It truly is a great time to be a flight simmer.

How long has it been since their previous devlog, more than a year? At that time it sounded like they’re finally *getting closer* to the release. But here we are with another bunch of reimagined this and procedural that.

I’m not saying it’s vaporware of course, and I’m still excited about this project, but I’m definitely getting a strong Bush Citizen vibes here.

I looked up my last few updates on Deadstick. I wrote about it 5 times prior to this article in 2020 and those updates were all in the first part of the year. We haven’t heard them very much since then (or I could have missed something over the summer).

Hopefully 2021 will be a good year for the Deadstick team.

Their last update is from October of this year, August before that.

Guess I missed some. Given how intense my fall has been… I’m not too surprised that I’ve missed out.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m not following them very closely, and the last major update on their YT channel was about a year ago.

Lets hope Deadstick sim doesent turn out to be like the much heralded Nexgen Flight Sim from a few years back…which turned out to be vapour-ware
