Growling Sidewinder gives us a closer look at DCS World 2.8

The next big update for DCS World is seemingly just around the corner as we are getting a close look at the update thanks to YouTuber Growling Sidewinder. Let’s have a look at what we’ve learned

MB-339, Persian Gulf updates, moving clouds and more

DCS World 2.8 might seem like a minor point update from 2.7 but it sounds like we’re in for quite a few smaller changes as well as the few big ones that we already knew about. Chief among them are the new moving weather which Growling Sidewinder gives us a really good look at both at the start of the video and in a neat little cinematic at the end. He mentions the new ice halos and rainbow effects too.

We’ve also learned that the Persian Gulf map is getting something of an update. Night lighting and terrain appear to be the focus here.

There’s also the big update to modern jet fighting which is looked at with a little more depth here. Endless circles and loops from the AI appear to be much less of an issue.

The lighting update also appears to be interesting as we a better balance between light and dark areas such as a bright exterior and a shadowed cockpit. That seems to be a nice update to how DCS looks overall.

Finally, IndiaFoxtEcho’s MB-339 is, according to Growling Sidewinder, coming in the same DCS World 2.8 update. One of my own readers mentioned in a recent conversation in the comments that the MB-339 had appeared on a list for Steam.

Going to watch that video. Very nice to see that the PG map is getting some love. I prefer it to Syria for some reason even though Syria is better quality. And really looking forward to the new weather. Sounds like a solid 15GB+ update. All of this is why DCS sits alone on a 1TB NVME drive all by its lonesome.

It’d be rough if you told me I could only have one but I do love the PG map. It’s definitely a fav of mine!

Sounds like a great update. Nice to see an iconic DSC map getting some renewed love from the devs. As for GS, he does a great job for those that are interested in the BVR stuff. not for me though, I find BVR stuff boring. Up close and personel cold war machines and WW2 warbirds is my cup of tea. But each to their own.

Persian Gulf remains one of my favs despite some of the newer releases so I’m pleased to hear that it’s getting updates!

This example was definitely new AI dogfighting rather than BVR.

Though he did explicitly say that the warbirds need their own AI tweaks for WVR. Hopefully that means anything newer than Mig-15/F-86 gets it soon!

There are two short but great PvE engagements in the vid that highlight the new weather as well as the new AI tactics.

Great vid with GS’ typical high production values!

Call me a wet blanket, but moving clouds, some bfm moves and pg map tweaks hardly justifies a point release. Where’s vulkan, multicore, dynamic campaign etc?

We have kind of undersold this update, there is one update on the PG map that will eventually go to them all we haven’t mentioned at all and is a long overdue improvement to night lighting (and one of my BIG wishlist reports fulfilled). Multithreading is in the testing and tuning phase, and include Vulcan in that. The Dynamic Campaign is… well… a lot of work, I can see how it crushed other companies, and I think what we are shooting for is even beyond that, but again, all words I know. We should be showing and seeing some stuff on all this soon I hope.

No disrespect meant. I’m an impatient consumer I know. Don’t stress too much about the dynamic campaign having to be perfect on release. For rev 1.0, we’d be happy for buildings to stay destroyed between missions 😁.
Much of the historic alure of “the other sim that we cannot name for reasons” was the wildly unpredictable nature of missions the DC generator spat out. 100% realistic? Hell no. Fun? Hell yes. Mermorable? 20 years later?. Tick.
With the fidelity you have in dcs, with the enviroments you are building, adding that x factor would elevate the experience to another level. And in VR it would be effing amazing.
