A couple of interesting items to report on from this week’s DCS World Weekend News updates. The big ones center around the UH-1 getting some key upgrades to the module while the DCS: Mosquito FB.VI livery contest winners are announced. Also mentioned is DCS: Normandy 2.0 which appears to be up for release next. News and previews are coming out so let’s have a look!
UH-1 gets an update
It’s been a little while since the Eagle Dynamics (formerly Belsimtek) DCS: UH-1H Huey was in the news. Although the module isn’t getting the full version 2 treatment right now, it is getting an engine modeling update that will more closely conform to the real world version.
Eagle Dynamics specifically mentions forum users ‘Piston85’ and ‘Ramsay’ together with others as key to helping pinpoint some changes in how the engine modeling with the UH-1 will work.
Here are the key points that were released by Eagle Dynamics on why the update was being done:
- Some of the old engine model parameters did not match with their real counterpart, especially in transient regimes.
- We wanted to improve temperature regimes compliance to match the real world counterpart, like EGT for example and other engine parameters changing, depending on altitude and outside temperature changes.
- We wanted to model some of the mechanics better, for instance a new model has allowed us to expand states for connection of the free turbine and main rotor.
- The new model allowed us to improve details of start-up and shutdown procedures, because of expanded modelling of compressors and free turbine.
This sounds like a terrific update for the UH-1H. It is an older model and I always welcome upgrades to these. Just recently we also learned about the F-86 getting some small tweaks and we know that the F-5 is due for some additional work as well.
I’d also love to see visual updates to these over time to keep them inline with what DCS World is in 2023. I’m sure those things will eventually happen.
Normandy 2 previews and news
DCS: Normandy 2.0 is coming and probably sooner than some of you think. Eagle Dynamics right now is imploring campaign and mission creators to take advantage of the new map by porting over their older missions and taking advantage of the upgraded map.
The update mentions Reflected Simulations and their now extensive list of WWII based campaigns as already being busy making the necessary updates. DCS: P-51D The Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney, DCS: Spitfire IX The Big Show and DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Jagdflieger are all mentioned! I assume and hope that we’ll see some of the other campaigns created for this map get an update too.
Meanwhile, two content creators have already released some previews of the map. Catch those below.
I also wanted to note to my regular readers that I am in on the preview process for Normandy 2 (in part thanks to your advocacy – I am humbled!). Technical difficulties an Easter holiday weekend scheduling have prevented me from getting in on this just yet but I hope to offer it soon!
Contest winners
A bunch of folks entered into the DCS: Mosquito FB.VI livery contest and we all benefit from the winners because their work will become part of the module’s livery selection. The new schemes include a mix of RAF variants as well as Mosquito’s used by other air forces.
The winners are:
- ZED TANK View
- OLD CROW View
- MarbleFalcon View
- sticks_62nd View
- Magic Zach View
- MJDixon View
- Home Fries View
- Flanker View
- II.JG1_Vonrd View
- Static_Actual View
Congratulations!
