It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from RAZBAM on what their plans are for the VTOL jump jet. A post on the RAZBAM Discord has given us some insights into what they plan to do and when. I’m sure it’ll attract mixed views. Here’s what we know!

The latest on the Harrier

A ‘sitrep’ provided by RAZBAM_Alpha Juliet on the company’s Discord provides us with a status update on the jet. The Harrier has fortunately had quite a bit of development over the years and has made tremendous strides but it is also, like most DCS World modules, still in need of a bit of TLC in some areas. RAZBAM do plan to update it but, as you’ll see below, those updates are a bit further afield.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, As you know the harrier development has been put to a standstill as resource are directed towards other modules at the moment. However know that this is temporary and let me detail to you the will of Razbam concerning our lovely V/STOL aircraft:

First and foremost : where do we want this module to go on the long run ?

We want the Harrier to end up to the Strike eagle standard in terms of fidelity and code quality. We want to squash the bugs that have been there for years, implement the last few features and get to a level where the only work left to do will be the occasional fix due to the most recent DCS update. We have a definite roadmap in terms of features and code areas that we will revamp first but I won’t share it here directly in order to not generate hype too early on.

Second : why are there no updates at the moment ?

We are currently reconfiguring ourselves in order to get the F15E to a level of completion and quality that would fit our standard. We are also getting new talents up to speed (don’t you love when I sound all corporate and all) in order to affect more thinking brain matter and keyboard typing fingers to the harrier in the future.

Third : when will we start to see updates again ?

On our side of stuff, we should get back to the visual studio spaghetti bowl marked AV8BNA around spring, and we expect the OB changelogs to have harrier items around early to mid summer. If things turn out different and are experiencing delays, I’ll come back to you to keep you updated.

No doubt there will be mixed reactions to this. On the one hand, no updates for several months is several months where known issues remain as they are. On the other hand, we have some transparency on where the development resources are going as well as where the company intends to move the module in several months time.

RAZBAM have done a good job in my view on the DCS: F-15E bringing that module out in a far better place than their prior releases and bringing the AV-8B up to a level of code quality that the F-15E represents together with the no doubt thousands of hours put into the module already to upgrade the systems, art, and capabilities will leave us with a better module. But there will be a wait – though few DCS World fans are going to be surprised that things tend to take time with this sim.

  1. “the visual studio spaghetti bowl marked AV8BNA”

And that folks, would be the money quote right there. That was one of their earlier modules, wasn’t it? Sounds sort of like it was one of those glorious learning projects that the software lead opens up and goes “What was I *thinking*!?” every time they crack it open…

    1. Yeah absolutely. The AV-8B has always had something weird going on. The F-15E feels a lot more solid… it sounds like the AV-8 will move that way eventually.

  2. Any Harrier love is good love. Haven’t flown it much recently, but for a while it was my favourite ride. Happy to get back into it.

  3. Kinda telling when a company drops one thing to focus on the new money-maker. Most professional institutions will strive to perfect the current project (AV8B) before attempting something new (F15). That’s why no one really trusts RAZBAM anymore.

    1. Is the choice that they chase the new income and probably get back to finishing the old stuff v plough on with the old stuff that is providing little new income, end up going bust and never finish it? And in fairness, a lot of things have been added/revamped along the way to currently not quite finishing it. I agree that it is frustrating that things are never quite 100% done, but I have some sympathy to the commercial realities of the situation.

And if you don’t trust RAZBAM anymore, you probably don’t trust ED either (e.g. pretty stagnant items like the Super Carrier).

      1. No, the choice is to put out a good product the first time, like many other developers, instead of repeated half-attempts that are just money grabs. The simplicity of my comment is that almost ALL other developers, especially ED and Heatblur, release products that are FAR more developed and bug-free than RAZBAM. And it’s not a one and done sort of thing, it’s the norm with RAZBAM. Don’t believe me? Look at the South Atlantic map and the incompleteness it released with. The “commercial realities of the situation” are that other devs do great jobs and release very well developed terrains and modules, while RAZBAM has repeatedly failed to. And that absolutely shows in the sales of their products. I love all these products and would gladly pay more for each module. But while Heatblurs products are worth, in my mind, at least double what they’re sold for, RAZBAM’s are probably only worth maybe $50 at launch, maybe less. They make a very conscious decision on what and when to release their products. No one is expecting 100% right off the bat, but when others are above 90% and you’re company is repeatedly below 70%, and it takes you years to even try improving, instead deciding to ignore those paying customers, you don’t last long. I very much hope they improve, and will gladly support them, but they need a new game plan. And soon.

  4. This is certainly welcome news. As is, the module is easily my favorite for air-to-ground, and I look forward to its continued refinement.

    1. That’s probably a bit rose-tinted. Hornet & Viper started out in EA very light on features and with more than a few bugs. Both are still, several years on since release, still in EA. As mentioned before, Super Carrier is an example of an ED project that is currently virtually stagnant in terms of adding new features that were promised.

Heatblur i’ll give you that they typically release stuff that is ‘nearer to done’ than most, but then they’ve mostly done early 3rd gen platforms. It’d be interesting to see if they could maintain that level with a more modern jet with more modern & complex weapons/avionics than they have done so far.

      2. Completely agree. The Viper in particular was arguably in the bottom 3 of all releases for DCS upon release. It was panned by almost everyone. Numerous key features and modes were just finally implemented in 2 or 3 years after release, and at end 2023 they are still adding stuff. There were whole standard suites of weapons you couldn’t use for ages. And don’t get me started on Supercarrier. It’s not per se the criticize ED here – I am just saying these comments ragging on Razbam are unfair. Even the lauded Heatblur talk I’d argue is rose colored. I bought the Viggen because of the Tomcat, just assuming to expect the same level of excellence. I came away pretty disappointed at the time (was in 2020). I didn’t touch it again for over a year, until they finally went back and patched it to update several things. I thought Razbam’s Mirage was the superior delta wing module in the sim, and really love the additions they made recently with the radar modelling and terrain following. I still prefer it heavily over the Viggen and would rate it higher for completeness and quality. And from Heatblur, where is the original F-14A? It’s been on their roadmap for 4+ years, but I guess they are busy working on the Phantom instead of finishing the Tomcat module … oh wait, isn’t that what some are accusing Razbam of doing?

Frankly, DCS fans should be happy anyone even wants to make aircraft for the game. There is so much more money in turning out iphone bubble popping crap or Fortnite drivel. These developers are all extremely passionate and have a strange bedfellow love for aviation and that is why they are doing this. Yes, including Razbam. So sit back and relax, and let the good stuff come out.

  6. “We are currently reconfiguring ourselves in order to get the F15E to a level of completion and quality that would fit our standard. “. What standard is that? Then the next aircraft they plan will come out and they will be “We are currently reconfiguring ourselves in order to get the New Aircraft to a level of completion and quality that would fit our standard. ” and so on.
When we just accept unfinished work in the form of so called “early access” or as I like to called it release and see how it sells this is what happens. They release it and it doesn’t sell well because of many different reasons one being it’s incomplete and is broken or the aircraft just isn’t what people are into. So they drop it and go into another plane and then use the reason we need to keep revenue coming in. Other developers make Aircraft to a much better level and way more complete and make money.
We as a community need to stop using phrases like I’d pay double($121.36 for module in AUS now) or day one pre purchase or shut up and take my money because they absolutely will and it will do nothing for us players. Also whenever a person gets on a forum or social media and God forbid the ED forum and has a legitimate criticism we need to stop attacking them and dividing the community. Everyone who has spent money is a customer first and foremost and absolutely has the right to an opinion. If we don’t voice our opinion nothing will get better it will only get worse.
