Eagle Dynamcs touts DCS performance improvements, plus MiG-23 HUD video

A few items to update everyone on with this DCS World news round-up. Eagle Dynamics were touting some interesting improvements released in the last update. There are graphs! Plus we have a video and some screenshots I missed from a few weeks ago showing off the MiG-23’s HUD.

Improved terrain rendering

This week’s DCS World Update doesn’t focus on something new but rather something that we just received. In the latest version of DCS World, Eagle Dynamics has implemented a series of under the hood changes to terrain rendering.

DCS World is an incredibly complex and demanding application that asks more from our PCs than the average game. Fortunately, we’ve got another story of some efforts by the Eagle Dynamics team to provide additional performance boosts. The first graph they present shows us GPU time and scenery object count with 2.9.2, the previous version, requiring increasing compute time as the object count increased. With 2.9.3, that line becomes much flatter which is great for complex scenes (such as a city or a densely forested area).

Then they tout improvements to VRAM, CPU, and GPU performance as well as streaming from a storage disk to also aid in various improvements to performance. The second graph is similar to the first except it measures CPU time and again we see an almost flat CPU time requirement as scenery object count goes up.

All very encouraging graphs and something that Eagle Dynamics is asking us to comment on as we go about having fun with the simulator.

If you tried DCS: Marianas early on, one of the series most complex maps when it comes to object count, and had performance problems, it may be worth going back now and seeing if you have a different experience. These charts seem to suggest that you might!

User Files and Campaign possibilities for creators

The other shout-outs this week by Eagle Dynamics are related items. The first is the User Files section which, if you don’t know about it, is a collection of community items for download. These include liveries, campaigns and more.

The second, related item, is that Eagle Dynamics is looking for people who may be contributing mission and campaigns to user file to get in touch with them if they are looking at offering a paid campaign.

Read about all of that right over here.

MiG-23 HUD images and video

Pulled from the RAZBAM Discord, we have an image and a video coming our way from elements of the RAZBAM development team. All concern the HUD on the DCS: MiG-23MLA which features a heads-up radar display. Those familiar with the Su-27 and MiG-29 in Flaming Cliffs will probably note at least a few similarities between this system and the one on those more advanced jets.

The video gives us an even better look with the display in action. You don’t get to see anything else in the cockpit but it gives us a little preview of the jet.

I’m curious to see what real world experiences are. My DCS is running quite smoothly these days.

I still can’t understand my VR settings.
Using tobii and no VR it’s smooth as glass on the highest settings.
using VR it’s 2-3fps on the lowest settings.

    frustrating.

Are you using a Quest headset through the cable link and a AMD GPU?
