We’re talking about another Cold War classic today thanks to an update from Red Star Simulations on their DCS: MiG-17 project. A new developer video is part aircraft design overview and part flight model demonstration. Let’s have a look!

MiG-17 flying and stalling

This new developer video is focused on the MiG-17’s wing and stall characteristics. Red Star report that the flight dynamics work is essentially complete, minus spins which are still in development. Their demo video shows us the various kinds of stalls that the MiG-17 can experience to show off the work.

The video also gives us a look at a real MiG-17 which shows very clearly how the MiG-17’s wing starts at a 49 degree angle and then changes to a 45 degree sweep nearer the wing tips. The profile of the wing changes too and its all intended to give the MiG-17 more stability than the MiG-15 in stalls. It’s a fascinating look at the aircraft’s design and the simple robust approach to solving some aerodynamic problems.

System work is also reportedly ongoing and it does sound like Red Star are keen to get the project complete “sooner rather than later.” Does that mean a 2025 release? It’s hard to guess these days but maybe!

  1. I’d say the MiG-17F would be more of a 2026 release because it takes five years for a third party aircraft module to go from announcement to final release more often than not. I remember when it was announced back in 2021 and I’m still very enthusiastic about it, even though you only hear of them 1-2 times a year. And once they’re done with the MiG-17, I’d like to see them do something like the MiG-25. That thing is a rocket on wings and it would be good red team aircraft for multiplayer.

Another question. Speaking of red team aircraft, I hope Dekka Ironworks gives a development news update about their J-8II sometime soon. They are very tight lipped on their progress. Since Dekka Ironwork’s J-8II project was revealed back in 2022 the chances of that being released before 2027 is slim. Still, I’d hold my breath (but not my life) for any DCS module. I like seeing the progress that DCS modules make, even if it takes years to make. Hopefully one day they can make a full fidelity Su-30MKK and J-10 as well. But I think that wont be done before 2030.

Lastly, speaking of Russian aircraft I would like to know what OctopusG’s next project will be. I think it will likely be the Su-17, but I think many people’s guess will be the same as they have teased it at least once before. But that’s a discussion for another time. I just think it’s good we are seeing a growing list of Russian aircraft.

  2. Nice to have an update and even better when it’s a video update so hats off to them for making it happen. It’s def a much needed aircraft and will fit in well with some of the desert maps.

As to when – who knows, you look at the video and think “2025” but I don’t know how many times I thought like that only to me disappointed.

  4. Now THAT is looking goooood!!
That is a DEFINITE addition to THIS collection, 100%. It may (and I stress ‘may’) encourage some improvement to the Sabre and the MiG-15 as well, let’s say ‘modeller’s envy’!!
