A combination of core updates for DCS World, updates to specific DCS World modules and the unveiling of a significant update for DCS: Afghanistan has just arrived for DCS World. Let’s have a look!

Afghanistan East

A significant update has just arrived for DCS: Afghanistan. The eastern portion of the map has seen some significant updates as has the map in general with the promotional trailer above showing off some of the technological enhancements that sharpen up the terrain details and provide for a better, more realistic, visual experience that looks to be on par with the more recently released DCS: Iraq map.

Some of the updates include improved ground textures, normal map textures, surface textures of settlements and fields, an improved road network, as well as various fixes to specific airports and locations around the map.

The update also comes with the promised separately released DCS: Afghanistan East. If you own the whole map then the update applies to you, however, you can now independently buy the eastern portion if that’s all you want. Eagle Dynamics have previously been selling the south western section of the map.

Here’s a little of what Eagle Dynamics had to say about the update:

This new area leverages our latest map technology and lessons learned from previous terrains, including the Southwest region. The eastern region of the Afghan map is characterised by its mountainous terrain interspersed with agricultural areas around Bagram and along waterways. Kabul, the capital and largest city in Afghanistan, includes several points of interest such as hospitals, historical sites, monuments, and unique neighbourhoods. The Eastern region also includes the urban areas of Bagram, Gardez, Jalalabad, and Khost and 10 new highly-detailed airfields:

• Bagram

• Kabul

• Jalalabad

• Gardez

• Khost

• Sharana

• Bamyan

• Urgoon Heliport

• Ghazni Heliport

• Khost Heliport

DCS World core update

Together with the new map is a core update for DCS World. Update 2.9.13.6818 ships with a new feature that enables IR seekers to react to flares fired before the missiles launch. Apparently this will need to be applied to modules individually and ED has noted that several aircraft including the F-5E, F-16C, and F/A-18C. Other aircraft will need to be updated later.

Other updates include fixes to the Mirage F1, F-4E Phantom II, JF-17, MB-339, Mi-24P Hind, and others. Even the Yak-52 has seen an update that includes fixing trim tab controls in the special menu.

    1. Definitely going to check it out as soon as possible. The initial offering was a bit underwhelming but this looks like it may more than make up for it.

      1. I like the airbases, most look pretty good. Some terrain textures are still meh!, but there are other places where, if the lighting is right, you get some mighty sweet eye-candy. Need to fly some more and to check out the night lighting. Can’t really give a fair account yet.

  2. I took a flight in my Apache from Kabul to Jalalabad through the canyons. It looks good and very distinct. Especially with the latest “atmospheric affects. It is still a blank canvas, that needs some missions, campaigns and dynamic campaigns. Still a little bummed that they are not planning to include some of the Soviet bases just outside of Afghanistan. Though a FARP can be built as a feeble substitute. In my mind, the Soviet-Afghan war is a primary draw for the map.
