1C Game Studios latest Brief Room episode is focused on systems. In the 25-minute video, the team talks about their efforts to improve the detail and fidelity of the aircraft systems and the associated damage model for it.

Modeling systems for the new sim

The episode talks about some key aircraft systems. Pneumatic, electrical and hydraulics are some of the key pieces of any aircraft and so this time around in the new IL-2 Korea sim they are doing a system where you have generators, i.e. an electrical generator, and consumers which would be your electrical systems that need power to function. In the new system, you can damage a component or a wire and the systems at the other end of it will cease the function.

They mention some interesting effects from this. So a damaged generator may start dropping voltage and that will control logic on things like lightbulbs which might dim when there isn’t enough power to keep them fully lit. Cool!

The new sim will have fuel management too with the ability to turn on and off fuel lines so that a damaged tank might drain but can be isolated from the rest of the systems. External fuel tanks can be dropped.

They also talk about the start-up of various aircraft systems. In Great Battles, these were largely a scripted animation while in IL-2 Korea the systems will come to life and function as they should because of the introduction of power or fuel or some other piece to the puzzle.

Editor’s note: I don’t think that means that we won’t necessarily have an auto-start system. Just that the functions of the aircraft, such as the F-51’s flaps raising up once hydraulics are turned on, will not be a scripted moment but one that happens because of the associated sub systems.

They report that the level of systems detail goes down to the individual gauge displays and their pointers. The pointers will shake (as shown at 7:51) and move around according to the forces acting on them.

They say that some players will want to fiddle with the different controls and others will want to get to the rest of the gameplay. It looks like IL-2 Korea will aim to split the difference – somehow!

Another feature mentioned is the ability to damage (and shred) wheels. Its shown off in a short video (around 15:51).

They confirm that radio beacons will be in IL-2 Korea, just as they were in Great Battles, however, there will be more controls. Some of those controls are going to be managed by what looks to be an entirely new tool-tip system with a new menu control that can simplify interactions with the aircraft. Some commands can be managed without default keybindings.

Another question was asked about how the damage model works and reportedly they will be using a much more part specific system for just about everything. In Great Battles they were still using probability charts based on hitting certain zones whereas in Korea it will be about hitting the specific part that controls a specific function… the control cables for ailerons is used in the visual.

Some interesting stuff revealed in this latest episode. If you’re interested in it, give it a watch above for a little more expansion on the details.

Having read some accounts and played around with similar in DCSW, it’s going to be a compelling, riveting experience…

All very interesting this. They need to get it all right before embarking because of the problems we all know about when it comes to ‘playing catch-up’. In that scenario you end up chasing something that SHOULD have been implemented and affecting all the other stuff that WAS! It’s a dark world is that and I don’t think it’s easy to get out of it once it starts… Here’s hoping eh?

  3. Wow some really big new stuff in here that is next level from IL2:GB

-Electrical systems damage can cause lights to flicker and go out

    -Cockpit needle shaking

-Fuel system selectors, and pumping to other fuel tanks

    -blown tires, flat tires

-gear being shaken to lock into place when hydraulics go out

Some really cool stuff not a lot of sims are not doing we are seeing for the first time.

VERY impressive – it’s becoming plainly apparent that Korea is a true next gen successor to the BoX series!

(and did i mention aircraft carriers and Corsairs yet again…? 🙂 )

It is looking impressive! Curious as always to see how they bring this together for launch.

  6. I think that the damage model for aircraft in the new series is far superior to those in Great Battles.

  7. Also, why couldn’t the IL-2 dev team make a damage model in this level of detail in Great Battles? Was there something preventing them from doing so?

      Two things:

      1) A core feature like this requires significant investment in time and effort by the programming team. It’s something you tend to do at the outset of a project and then tweak as time goes on. Which brings me to point two…

      2) Retrofitting an entirely new damage model into an already mature product is a significantly more difficult challenge. Great Battles now has somewhere approaching 100 airplanes that would all need to be upgraded to the new system. Consider how much time would be needed to match the aircraft with the new core technologies.

      1. I suppose you’re right. That makes much more sense to me. It’s not that they can’t do it it’s that they cannot afford to spend the time, money and manpower into a product that is becoming outdated to it’s competitors. I think that is what you mean.

    2. Just like the new graphics model, this would require remodelling the aircraft. They’ve made it clear that this would be a lot of work without payoff, as they couldn’t make people pay again for the old games. So it would not be financially viable.

  8. Should it not be ‘Briefing Room’? Or is it entitled as a commentary on the fleeting nature of life (and sims).

TBH, the longer this goes the less interest I have in it. Initially it sounded great but…is there actually much milage in a 3-year mostly static war (yes, I know Pusan, Inchon etc) where there was pretty limited battles with significant air significance?

Also, there are radio beacons in GB? That is news to me!

Yes it should be. This is one of those Russian translation moments.

I’m not sure how much interest there’s going to be but right now I think the prospect of a more or less fully realized Korean War simulator is just something we haven’t seen for a couple of decades. There’s a novelty here that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Yes, indeed there are beacons in Great Battles. Any of the aircraft with either integrated radio loops or masts and the appropriate instrumentation in cockpit can make use of them. It’s a simplified system in operation but I’ve made use of them online with the TAW scenarios for example as a good way to get a beacon back to a friendly airbase after a very hectic raid.

    2. Map will only have north part, Inchon and towards border, and front was not moving mutch in time they are depicting, but user made missions can change that, early war was fast moving , later not so mutch. Air battles mostly same, onesided ground attacks, and one type of dogfights, bombing at night with big bombers more then day, small and medium mostly on UN side, not mutch oposition. “TBH, the longer this goes the less interest I have in it. 3. I think that the mixture of jets and piston airplanes could be really interesting. We should also be getting a carrier DLC for it.

  10. i like that now hits will do damage on place they hit insted random % of damage to system in that part, dont like mutch that they will go clicable cocpit route, in this early airplanes i think its waist, it usealy prolongs already long development time of new airplanes, and we end up getting less and less airplanes usealy.
