New Red Star Simulations DCS: MiG-17 video shows 23mm, 37mm and Sakr rockets

We’ve got a new developer video coming in from Red Star Simulations on the DCS: MiG-17 with some tests of the aircraft’s various weapon systems. Let’s have a look at what they are testing.

Testing it out on the range

Prior videos in the series have talked about engines and aerodynamics but this time it’s all about the things that go boom with a quick overview of the NR-23 autocannon (80 rounds per gun), N-37 cannon (40 rounds) and of the Egyptian Sakr rockets. Red Star decided to go with the Egyptian modification of the aircraft as an option to provide for this unique ground attack capability for the MiG-17.

The video also gives us a look at the sounds (which may still see some tweaking) of these weapons in action.

The video indicates that there’s still a lot of work in progress underway here but progress is looking pretty good right now on this Cold War era jet.

    Nice aircraft and more redfor is always welcome. This will pair nicely with the F-4 even though there is no Vietnam map.

      There really should be a 1960s era Indochina map. I believe it would sell really well.

    It’s good to hear from Red Star Simulations after a while of silence and working behind the scenes. I am really looking forwards to their MiG-17 coming out. I remember when they announced it back in April 2021. My best guess is that it will be released sometime next year as a third party DCS module usually takes five years to make. But I could be wrong. But next year is my best bet.

      Pretty good eh? They say they are going to tweak them some more but I do have to say that the 37mm sounds really satisfying there.

    I do have high hopes for the MiG-17. It would suit almost every Cold War map there is in DCS. Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Fulda Gap, I could go on.

      It would! It’s going to fit in nicely with the other jets on the various Cold War scenarios. Even when its a little overmatched in capabilities, it’ll have a decent enough attack capability with the rockets to be useful.

        I hope they make a MiG-23 or a MiG-27 next. That would be very handy to have on the Fulda Gap as the Warsaw Pact. I think the MiG-23 in particular is a big part that is missing for the Warsaw Pact.

        As for the MiG-27, I’d like to fly it in DCS one day, ever since I saw it teased in RAZBAM’s plans on DCS’s unofficial roadmap. But then that could have been added in by anybody. Still, I am hopeful for a Flogger-D, though I understand I will be waiting at least 5 years.

        I suspect the MiG-23 will be in limbo for a while with the RAZBAM situation. The other Russian Cold War swing-wing jet might be a contender… an Su-22 would be an interesting addition!

        Agreed. I think one is on the way. Won’t be here for a few years though. And I suspect you’re right about Magnitude 3LLC and OctopusG collaborating to make the Su-17 or Su-22. Would be fun to fly.

        I hope I didn’t suggest that they were collaborating thought I’m not against that. As far as I know there was a miscommunication that saw both devs looking into the same family of aircraft.

        You didn’t suggest. My mistake. I remember you saying on the DCS roadmap that this could be a team up, but then you did say it might not be so sorry about that.

        As for Magnitude 3LLC and OctopusG, one could be doing the Su-17 and the other could very well be doing the Su-22, the export version of the Fitter.

      Nothing recently. I suspect it will miss the Q2 launch window (not a surprise as that’s how it goes). Matt Wagner, when doing the Germany live stream said something about systems programming was just getting underway (going by memory here) so it’s probably going to be a Q3 or later thing? We’ll have to see. It’s my most anticipated launch of the year.
