Back in May, CowanSim revealed their next helicopter project with a simulation of the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. New screenshots and details of the project have just been revealed so let’s have a look at what the developer is planning.

Features discussed

Powerful engines, capable avionics and popular with VIPs, the S-76 helicopter has been a commercial success from the late 1970s until just recently and CowanSim are looking to bring that experience to Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The project is reportedly in its final stages of development. It has been developed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 primarily with compatibility for 2024 also in mind. A native 2024 specific version will be developed and released later on. Both medical and luxury/VIP interiors are coming as part of the package. Cowan reports that the aircraft will have extensive systems simulation designed to match real world operation as closely as possible. That includes a custom coded fully functional autopilot system.

The S76C++ is expected to release sometime in July so it won’t be a long wait!

Other helicopter updates

We also have a bit of news on some of the developers other helicopters. The report indicates that final updates for all of their 2020 released helicopters (with 2024 compatibility) are due right after the S76C++ launches and that fully native MSFS 2024 helicopters are coming for the entire CowanSim line-up after that.

I’ve never seen a 76C++ with the electrical and system switches at the front of the center pedestal like that. They all have them as white rocker switches above the pilot and co pilot windows. The switches as depicted are normal for the A models. I’ve flown B, C+, C++ and D models of the 76, and I’ve seen one 76C+ with that switch setup, and that was customized for single pilot ops in Switzerland.

No idea personally. I know Cowan does good work and tries to gain access to real world models when possible. It looks like a fascinating helicopter type!

I’m sure they modeled it on a real machine. It just seems a bit odd to model the configuration on what be a one off, or at least very limited in number, custom config.

The joke I was told early on was that Sikorsky would customize the 76 to the point that if you’ve seen one 76, you’ve seen one 76.

The 76 is a great machine. After 12yrs and almost 4000hrs it was bittersweet to leave it behind for something supposedly “better”. I’m excited to try out this module when it is released.
