Two new aircraft have joined the list of Great Battles long line of available types. Yak-1 Series 23 and Yak-3 Series 9 are now available for owners of the IL-2 Sturmovik: Odessa and Leningrad – Siege and Liberation. There are also a few notable fixes too.

Two Yak’s ready for flight

IL-2 Sturmovik: Odessa and Leningrad – Siege and Liberation has quite the interesting aircraft mix. Combining early and late war aircraft into the same set probably wouldn’t work except as a kind of bookend to the series filling in some gaps from the Eastern Front aircraft set. And that’s exactly what we have with these next two fighters.

Yak-1 Series 23 represents an earlier model than the Series 69 that we’ve had in the series since 2013. It’ll slot in nicely for the 1941 part of the campaign for this module while also being useful for Battle of Moscow. Speaking of which, we now have an answer that career mode updates for Battle of Moscow to add in the older aircraft types will “probably be done next year.”

Meanwhile, we also have the Yak-3 Series 9 which represents one of the later models of the Yak series. The Yak-3 sports a smaller wing, aerodynamic refinement, reduced weight, and slightly enhanced firepower all in one package. The type was regarded by the Luftwaffe as a highly dangerous airplane to fight against. It should be interesting to fly.

Meanwhile, the update also comes with a small number of added features and bug fixes. There are several smaller tweaks to the Odessa map including the addition of the 180 mm B-1-P coastal battery gun. AI aircraft can now use rockets for attacking aerial targets. The I-153 and Hurricane Mark II also now have Finnish Air Force paint schemes and tactical markings. A variety of other smaller bugs have been sorted out too.

  1. I hope we get a news update concerning 2026 and beyond from the IL-2 team. I am excited to learn about what will come after Odessa and Leningrad.

    1. Not really sure what you mean. Korea will come this year or so. We already know that a Korean Carrier DLC and Pacific module are next for 2026+.

There are rumours of a B-239 and/or G.50 collector planes to support the Finnish map. But nothing significant as I think you’re also saying.

Korea and the carrier DLC I’m sure is the focus as you say.

I’d suggest that we’ll see a few core updates and possibly one or two additional collector planes. I don’t think anything else is in the cards.

      1. We will see what happens. Even though Odessa and Leningrad are probably going to be IL-2 Great Battles last module, I am hopeful we will see more collector planes come to this series, possibly the Bf-110 F-2, the Mosquito Mk.IV, and the Pe-3Bis as I have heard these aircraft are very much wanted for IL-2 GB.

      1. I’m not saying that the Bf-109G-10 and Fw-190A-9 along with the Spitfire Mk.XIVe, Ta-152 and Bf-109G-6A/S should never be the game it’s just that given the fact the game only goes up to March 1945 where we can only use some of these planes historically for like a month and there still are some gaps to be filled elsewhere, I would prefer the Pe-3 and Bf-110F-2 because we can use these in many places including in Dieppe scenarios for the latter. Does making a Pe-3 and or Bf-110F-2 require more work for these new modellers than the Ta-152?

One plane I would like to see that would require a bit more work but nowhere near the amount for like the A-20G is the Mosquito Mk. IV with the glass nose. Would give us another Allied bomber and something new in general.

      2. Looking at airplanes they made last few years im just saying fighter airplane is high probability, bomber almost 0, and twin fighter slightly more then 0. They could make Pe-3 or 110 for S&L, they decided single engine is whats gona be. Im just going by what they do, and then 109g10 or 190a9 is high likely to be added next.

    4. The Zeppelin is probably the only major thing left. I still hope we’ll see the seaplanes from RoF brought over because we already have the BoN map and perhaps the Rumpler C.IV, Aviatik C.I, BE2, along with the Bf-110F-2, Pe-3 and Hurricane Mk.I for the Finns. At this point I don’t want to see anymore Bf-109s and Fw-190s: those planes have been done to death in the game.

I haven’t heard much about that in quite some time. I’ll see if there’s any comments out there.

    2. The Cliffs of Dover stuff is done by a volunteer team, not by 1CGS, so it’s a bit off topic.

Anyway, they missed one deadline and haven’t set a new one. And there are no indications of a release any time soon.

      1. Well I believe they want to get it right as possible when they release Fortresses and Focke-Wulfs.
