Lots of news to report on and here is just some of it. DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum has released today which marks a significant content release for the series. We’ve also got a new MiG-29 tutorial from Matt Wagner which will help you if you’re plotting to fly it on launch with some key information on how to use the aerial combat systems. A significant update to the sim has also happened today with a long list of modules seeing updates.

Fulcrum is here

For years we’ve heard from community members saying over and over that they wanted to see some Russian DCS World level high fidelity aircraft in the sim and for years there were rumours and then confirmation that at least one was being developed. That day is here with the early access launch of the DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum.

Eagle Dynamics are touting the DCS: MiG-29A’s featureset including a fully interactive clickable cockpit based on 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry for accuracy. Detailed systems including INS based navigation system, radar warning and countermeasure systems, IRST and laser range finder, and detailed radar model among other features. A simplified IFF system is offered for now. The aircraft also, critically, features both English and Russian language cockpit and vocalizations. A full complement of weapons including R-27 variants, R-73, R-60, and 30mm GSH-30-1 autocannon as well as a mix of general purpose bombs and rockets are also included.

The aircraft has a roadmap of post release early access features that include GCI command system, a more detailed IFF system, full flight manual and a campaign by Eagle Dynamics as well as more single missions and liveries are planned.

It’s also worth noting that the aircraft has a list of known issues to be patched in the patch notes including autopilot oscillations above 600 km/h, brake chute not being visible in multiplayer, and cannon muzzle flash improvements.

DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum is available on Steam and the DCS e-Shop for $63.99 USD.

Eagle Dynamics are selling separately a Garmin GNS430 which can be added to the aircraft and includes optional 3D model within the cockpit (closely mirroring many retrofitted MiG-29s). The add-on is $5.99 USD.

Learn the combat systems of the MiG-29

Matt Wagner is back today as well with a new tutorial for the DCS: MiG-29. This one teaches about the MiG-29’s aerial combat systems with a look at how the radar and electro-optical systems work as well as a demo of the helmet mounted sight and off-boresight target lock and engagement.

A new DCS World update

DCS 2.9.20.15010 is the latest version to release and it has a few other notable updates packaged in. MiG-29 aside, there’s also the release of the new DCS: A-10C II Outpost campaign by Stone Sky available for $10.99 USD.

There are plenty of other updates ranging from minor bug fixes to significant updates to specific aircraft and weapons. The R-27 has a lengthy note in the update description mentioning a new CFD based flight model, Kalman-type guidance filters, seeker gimble mechanics, INS and datalink system, conical proximity fuse, and various other simulation updates.

The DCS: F-16C, F/A-18C, AH-64D, F4U-1D, JF-17, and AJS-37 are among the aircraft receiving significant updates. So too has the DCS: Iraq map, Caucasus map, Cold War Germany map, Sinai map, and DCS: South Atlantic which has now emerged out of early access. Read the full change log here!

  1. Lots of nice stuff in this update. Passing on the Mig-29, at least for now. All my brain cells are reserved for the C-130. I really want to go deep on that one. Not to mention the Mig is about $100 Cdn. with the tax thrown in and I’m not an A2A guy, so that’s that. But I’m sure many will love it, and that cockpit does look excellent.

    1. Yeah the MiG-29 isn’t the only big thing here as there’s lots of updates. It very much sounds like the C-130 might just be your thing and yeah I’m looking forward to it too. It’s a bit more like flying airliners than the average DCS product, I’m curious to see how that crosses over.

  2. I do wonder if we will see more Russian 4th Gen fighter aircraft, or even Chinese or Indian aircraft for DCS. I know that I have expressed my desire to see Eagle Dynamics do something like the MiG-29S and M, or the Su-27S, Su-30 or Su-35, which I understand if it is being tiresome at this point, but I do wonder once the F-15C and F-35 are released, what will they do next? I guess my guess is as good as anyones at this point in time.

    1. None of those modern ones are likely. You have to go back 40 years and pick from types available then. This is a Russian law situation reportedly so it’s not got as much wiggle room as some of the others.

Rumour mill is pointing to a MiG-23. No source so we’ll see if that’s just wishful thinking. But there’s overlap with the 29’s avionics so it’s possible.

      1. I am intrigued. I think DCS is well overdue for a MiG-23 full fidelity module.

  3. A higher fidelity Su-27 would be very welcome indeed, although probably not likely unless somewhere like Ukraine would participate in a donor. What might seem out of left field is adding more drone support – small and large scale, since that’s where things are realistically going. Ultimately, it skirts the curtain behind stealth and secret electronics for a bit more accessible items that are used practically. Just a thought though.

    1. My understanding is that there’s a rolling date on what they are allowed to do. So we’ve got a very early 1980s MiG-29 and I think maybe a mid 1980s Su-27 is possible in the future in a few years. Though there’s a few rumours now circulating within the community that a MiG-23 is going to be the next red airplane that happens – I have no source so take it with a grain of salt.

We definitely need to see more drones added to the sim. That’s very much where things are going.

      1. Given the restrictions, I’d be perfectly happy with an Su-33 Sea Flanker done to the same level as the FF -29a.

id even be willing to go for simpler combat systems (a la FC4) in order to get the pleasure of flying an otherwise Full Fidelity Flanker 😁

      2. Wouldn’t be opposed to that at all! FC2026? Let’s make it happen!

      3. MiG-23 would be great and my source on the rumor is 👆- just joking. I actually hadn’t heard that but it would be nice if it was true (was actually thinking about the 23 after watching Wag’s weapons video for the Mig-29A as they have “similar” HUD radar displays

      4. Hah! Yeah it may simply be wishful thinking in the community. But there’s definitely overlap in avionics that would hopefully make it a logical project.

      5. AFAIK, the MiG-23 was actively under development by Razbam.

do you have any info on who might be doing it instead?

I’m interested in the -23, of course, but AFAIK it never had a great reputation, and so…

      6. The rumour suggests it’s ED themselves taking it on. They have a “red team” group that seems to have coalesced around the Mi-24, the Ka-50 revamp and then the MiG-29. I suspect they will be moving to finish up the free Su-25 revamp and then they will be onto something.

It seems like RAZBAM’s projects are unfortunately dead. Something I’m lamenting quite a bit… still.

But I can see the logic to moving to something like the 23 or something else from that era. It is apparently quite the airplane to fly even if it’s terrible in some variants. It does seem that there’s one or more Su-22 models kicking around too.

Or this could be mostly community driven thinking and desire for an aircraft driving the rumour. I’m not writing an article about it until there’s something to hang onto. Back when the 29 was rumoured we had quotes to go along with that supported the idea. Not there yet with this.

  4. also significant upgrades (and download sizes!) to several terrains.

even the old Caucasus map got some love – have to check that out asap!

p.s.: did you see that HB announced the AI Intruder for next patch, as well as the Early A Tomcat!?! 😁

  5. The MiG-29 is super cool 🙂 Only tried it on a short flight yesterday evening. Seems to be a bug on the nozzle/afterburner visuals though, at least in my installation, but there seems to be some other hickups as well in the newest DCS version. Sometimes it takes the mission editor a minute or two to save, perhaps some old mod, or old MOOSE?

    Anyway, MiG-29 seems solid.

    1. No issues with the Mission Editor here. Not sure what’s happening for you there.

I’ll have to have a look at the nozzles again myself but I didn’t see anything wrong on first glance. The aircraft has been a joy to fly though I’m starting to notice some of the early access bits that are missing. Article coming soon!

      1. you guys are making me jealous!

I’ve only had time to launch the Caucasus Take Off Instant Action for a quick look around and controls check (yep – rudders and stick were double-bound, as usual!).

Can hardly wait to give it a shakedown flight – your reviews and others I’ve seen all indicate a well developed EA release 😁👍
